Legendary musician Billy Joel is set to auction off a significant part of his personal motorcycle collection next month, featuring over 70 bikes, as he navigates the challenges posed by a recent health diagnosis. The auction, organised by Gooding & Co. at the Javits Center in New York City, will take place on November 20 and 21, with proceeds benefiting The Joel Foundation, which aims to bring music to students and communities.

At the age of 77, Joel recently announced that he is currently unable to drive or perform due to a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that impacts balance, vision, and hearing. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he shared that his neurologist advised against performances, highlighting the risks associated with the demands of live shows—stating that each performance is akin to experiencing a concussion.

This condition, although treatable, has required Joel to reassess certain aspects of his life, including his passion for riding motorcycles. Known as a long-time motorbike enthusiast, he noted that despite owning over a hundred motorcycles, the reality of ageing has made it increasingly difficult to maintain his riding hobby. Reflecting on his decision to auction off his collection, Joel said, “It’s time for me to turn it over to somebody else.”
Among the notable models that will be available for bidding include bikes from prestigious manufacturers such as Ducati, BMW, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, and Triumph. A standout piece from his collection is a custom-painted 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville, a special gift from Madison Square Garden, commemorating his 150th sold-out show at the venue. This unique motorcycle even comes with a matching helmet that highlights every show and year he performed at Madison Square Garden.
Joels’ passion for motorcycles has deeply influenced his music. He famously composed his hit song “You May Be Right” while riding in the rain, showcasing the integral role that motorcycles have played in both his life and career. During the auction, he has expressed how he hopes aspiring riders will find joy in the collection, emphasising that he was always more of a rider than a collector.
In previous interviews, including an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel, the musician has discussed his health challenges candidly. He assured fans that despite his diagnosis and recent surgery to implant a shunt in his brain, he is managing well and continuing to participate in his recovery. “It’s hard to tell what’s age and what’s a condition, so I agreed to do the shunt. I had surgery, and it actually improved things,” he explained.
Joel emphasised that he appreciates the support and concern from his fans but reassured them that he is not facing any serious health crisis. “What I have is something very few people know about… I just wanted to let people know, don’t worry about me being deathly ill or anything,” he said. The musician remains committed to his physical therapy and follows his doctors’ guidance to maintain his health.
As he prepares for the auction, Joel hopes to find a new home for his beloved motorcycles while also contributing to a cause close to his heart. The funds raised through this event will support The Joel Foundation’s mission of providing music education and resources to students and communities, allowing the power of music to resonate with a new generation.
With his iconic status and long-standing contributions to the music industry, this auction marks a reflective chapter for Joel, who is known not only for his musical talents but also for his enduring love for motorcycles. As he steps back from the road, fans and collectors alike eagerly await the opportunity to acquire a piece of his remarkable legacy.
