Slakoff recalls the moment vividly. She was invited to a book launch celebrating the history of Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), the airline where her grandmother, Beverly Russell, served as a flight attendant from 1965 to 1978. Inspired by the invitation, Slakoff decided to wear one of her grandmother’s original uniforms for the occasion, a decision that would lead her down a nostalgic path. “I loved trying on her uniforms! It was really meaningful to be able to wear essentially a piece of history,” she expressed in an exclusive interview.

The TikTok video that Slakoff filmed featured a vibrant vintage dress paired with a matching jacket, a small hat, her grandmother’s original flight bag, and eye-catching go-go boots. “I’m not an actual flight attendant, but my grandma was many, many years ago,” she noted earnestly. This was merely the beginning, however, as viewers clamoured for more, prompting Slakoff to turn the initial filming into a mini-series showcasing the other vintage outfits her grandmother had saved from her flying career.

Growing up in San Diego, Slakoff developed a deep appreciation for her grandmother’s stories about her glamorous days as a flight attendant. Aside from similar physical traits, such as their petite 5-foot-1 stature, Slakoff cherished the narratives of her grandmother’s adventures in the skies. During the 1960s and 70s, being a flight attendant was a highly sought-after role, imbued with glamour and excitement. Yet, the job also came with its share of stringent expectations, particularly concerning appearance and conduct, which Slakoff recounted as she explored the uniforms.
Lily Ann’s grandmother fondly remembers her time with PSA, referring to it as the “time of her life”. Despite the challenges, such as mandatory weigh-ins and the need to maintain a certain image, Russell forged lifelong friendships and relished the camaraderie among her fellow crew members. Important rites of passage, like meeting her husband, also unfolded during these formative years, although it was through a connection outside of work, rather than within the confines of an aircraft.
Upon inspecting the treasured uniforms, Slakoff was struck by their durability. “The fabric was comfortable but extremely durable and well-made,” she remarked, noting the bold colours and flattering designs that made the experience even more enjoyable. Among the surprises she uncovered were original flight tags and other accessories that added a distinct charm to each outfit. The care and attention to detail from that era not only reflected on the uniforms but also on the nostalgia they evoked.
As their family connection to aviation history grew, Slakoff recalled an eighth-grade excursion to Washington, D.C., when she encouraged Russell to submit one of her uniforms to the National Air and Space Museum, where it is now proudly displayed. The recent TikTok videos provided another platform for her grandmother to share her history, inviting viewers to reminisce and engage with fond memories of flying with PSA.
Despite her admiration for the airline industry, Slakoff has reservations about pursuing a career as a flight attendant due to a fear of turbulence, which she candidly shares. Nevertheless, her grandmother, now 80, remains spirited and adventurous, with plans for a family trip to Europe on the horizon. While Slakoff may not follow in her grandmother’s footsteps within the airline industry, she has found a unique way to honour that legacy by sharing her grandmother’s passion and experiences through social media.
With each piece of vintage attire, Slakoff doesn’t just wear a uniform; she embodies a connection to her family’s aviation history, bridging generations through the stories and memories that these outfits encapsulate. “I’m also so lucky that she saved them all!” Slakoff concluded, recognising the value in not just the clothing but the rich family narrative they represent. As the world continues to celebrate past eras of air travel, Slakoff invites everyone to partake in these cherished memories and relive a time when being a flight attendant was indeed a glamorous affair.
