Abby Howard, a social media influencer, has recently sparked a conversation regarding ‘mum-shaming’ after encountering criticism during a family outing at Disney. The mother-of-three took to Instagram to defend herself against public scrutiny regarding the safety of her newborn son, Fischer, while she carried him in a rain poncho. Howard’s swift response aimed to clarify her parenting choices and address concerns from her followers.

On 12th October, the 27-year-old shared images on her Instagram Stories where she expressed her thoughts about comments made by some of her followers. The criticism arose when Howard posted pictures of herself with Fischer, who was secured to her chest under a plastic poncho. While the attire was intended to keep her son dry during potential rain at the theme park, it drew concern from some who perceived it as unsafe.
In her response, Howard clarified, “Hey, I just want everybody concerned to know that there are no sleeves on my poncho so there is lots of airflow up to the baby.” She likened the setup to a cover used on a stroller, emphasising that she was attentive to her son’s comfort and safety. “He was very safe as I was constantly wafting air and checking on him. Didn’t want the little guy to get soaked,” she added, concluding with a gentle reminder that “mum-shame is never cool.”

The influencer elaborated further in subsequent posts, distinguishing between genuine concern and what she referred to as ‘mum-shaming.’ She noted, “Some people need to learn the difference. I take my children’s well-being very seriously and I won’t let that be questioned any more.” In her last story of the series, she assured her followers that her family was enjoying their day at the theme park, wishing everyone a good time too.
Abby and her husband, Matt Howard, have three sons: Griffin, aged four, August, aged three, and newborn Fischer. The couple welcomed their youngest child in August, announcing in a celebratory Instagram post that their family had grown to five. In a photo shared with their announcement, the couple radiated joy, with Abby cradling their newborn in a hospital bed, his face lovingly obscured by a heart emoji.
The birth of Fischer marked a significant moment for the Howards, especially following Abby’s heartbreaking experience of miscarriage in September 2022, when they lost a baby girl named Emerson Nicole at 17 weeks. The couple had candidly shared their grief on social media, recounting how they had learned the devastating news during what was meant to be a routine pregnancy appointment. Acknowledging their loss, they wrote, “The news felt unimaginable. The grief is absolutely devastating. But we feel so much gratitude for the time that we did get to have with her. And we still have hope.”
The conversation around maternity and parenting, particularly in the age of social media, has garnered significant attention. Influencers like Howard often find themselves navigating the complex dynamics of online parenting communities, where moments of vulnerability can sometimes lead to unfounded criticism.
As the discourse continues, Howard’s instance serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between sharing personal experiences and the expectations placed upon parents. It raises questions about the impact of public scrutiny on parenting practices, particularly among those who share their lives online.
While Howard’s intentions were to showcase a joyful family moment, the incident highlights the broader issue of ‘mum-shaming’ that many parents face today. As she stressed in her stories, it’s essential to differentiate genuine concern from criticism that serves only to undermine parental confidence.
Ultimately, Howard’s message resonates with many: parenting choices can be highly personal, and while advice should always be welcome, shaming should not be part of the conversation. As families venture out into public spaces, it’s crucial to foster an environment of support rather than judgement, allowing every parent the grace to navigate their unique journeys.
