Samantha Youngs is believed to have gone missing while kayaking near Torrey Pines Gliderport, a location situated in the coastal neighbourhood of La Jolla. Her car was discovered parked in the cliffside lot of the private airport, adding further urgency to the search effort.

According to the San Diego Police Department, Youngs last communicated with her family shortly before 8 p.m. on October 12. Following the report of her absence, Coast Guard watchstanders were notified by 6 a.m. the next day about her missing status and her kayak. This launched a multi-agency search that involved police, Coast Guard vessels from several regions, and the San Diego Lifeguard Service. Search teams scoured the waters around Torrey Pines Natural Reserve and La Jolla Shores, covering an expansive area of approximately 484 square miles.
After 11 hours of searching, the Coast Guard announced the suspension of active search operations at around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday. Cmdr. Celina Ladyga, the acting commanding officer for the Coast Guard Sector San Diego, explained that the decision was taken after all reasonable efforts were exhausted. “Our thoughts remain with the missing individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” she added, expressing sympathy for the anguish of the family.
In the wake of the suspended search, the San Diego Police Department has urged anyone with information regarding Youngs’ whereabouts to come forward. They have provided contact details for the Communications Division, asking people to reference Case #26-500941 when calling.
In their outreach efforts, police shared images of Youngs and her kayak, giving a description to assist in the search. Youngs is noted to be a white female with brown hair and hazel eyes, standing at approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing about 115 pounds. As of now, authorities indicate that it is unclear what she was wearing at the time she was last seen.
While the search has ceased, the hope remains that someone may have relevant information that could assist her family in finding answers. The incident has drawn attention from the local community and beyond, stirring concern and sympathy for those involved.
The Coast Guard’s decision to conclude the search was undoubtedly challenging, as these operations often weigh heavily on the hearts of rescue teams, especially in situations involving missing persons. The emotional toll of such cases often resonates far beyond the immediate family and friends of the missing individual.
As people await any potential updates, the case underscores the importance of vigilance and safety for those engaging in water-based activities, particularly in areas that can be unpredictable and dangerous.
