A young veterinary assistant from Chicago, Khalyl Warren, recently recounted a thrilling yet terrifying encounter with wildlife during his family trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. At just 24 years old, Warren has always felt a strong connection to animals, but nothing prepared him for the adrenaline-pumping experience he faced during the visit.

Warren and his family travelled to the renowned Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. This particular trip was more than just a vacation for Warren; it allowed him to witness animals in their natural surroundings, far removed from the controlled environment of a veterinary clinic. He expressed his excitement about being a guest in the animals’ habitat and recognised the importance of respecting their space and adhering to the guidelines provided by those familiar with the region.

The dramatic events unfolded one evening as Warren and his family returned to their resort after dinner. As they walked past the staff cabins, they noticed that a pack of hyenas was circling nearby. The scene quickly escalated when a group of two lions approached from the opposite side, prompting a tense standoff. Neither the lions nor the hyenas seemed willing to back down, and the visibility heightened the tension as deep growls echoed in the air.
Initially, Warren felt a mix of excitement and curiosity about the close encounter with wildlife. However, these feelings quickly morphed into fear as the hyenas began moving in their direction. Resort staff quickly issued instructions, advising Warren and his family to remain calm and not run, as sudden movements could provoke the hyenas into a chase. Warren noticed that the hyenas appeared to be retreating from the lions, which shifted the dynamics of the encounter.
As the situation evolved, Warren found himself utilising his mobile phone to capture the extraordinary moment. A TikTok video he later shared documents the encounter and shows his camera spiralling out of control as the hyenas, illuminated by the faint light, advanced towards them. Reflecting on the moment, Warren acknowledged that recording the event became secondary to ensuring their safety.
He recalled having to consciously manage his anxiety and breathing as he stood still, following staff instructions to let the hyenas pass without interference. The moment was undoubtedly intense, heightened by the unpredictable nature of wild animals. After what felt like an eternity, Warren and his family watched as the hyenas moved away, and the immediate tension gradually dissipated.
Months later, the experience remains vivid in Warren’s mind, providing him with a profound insight about wildlife. He firmly believes that interactions with wild animals are not mere performances for human entertainment; they are genuine encounters that stem from instinct, survival, and territory. He emphasised the importance of respecting animals in their natural habitats and cautioned against making assumptions about their intentions, even for those who may feel familiar with the species.
Warren’s harrowing encounter serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of treating wildlife with the respect it deserves. The lessons he took from that evening in Botswana underline the significance of awareness and appreciation for the living beings that inhabit our planet alongside us. This brush with nature, while frightening, ultimately deepened his understanding and respect for wildlife, reminding him—and us all—of our role as stewards of the animal kingdom.
