Singer Kelly Clarkson has recently found herself at the centre of a debate following her shopping experience at Art of Play, a toy store located in Brooklyn, New York. Clarkson took to social media on 10 October to express her disappointment over how she felt she was treated while visiting the store.

Independent journalist Pablo Torre shared footage from the interaction, revealing a brief encounter between Clarkson and a store employee. The 4-minute, 50-second clip, which features no audio, shows the artist exploring various items in the shop, including a kaleidoscope and a mechanical bird sculpture. During her visit, Clarkson seemed to engage with one of the shop’s owners, who held a discussion with her before directing her attention elsewhere in the store.
The footage adds context to Clarkson’s social media post made shortly after her shopping trip, in which she described feeling judged by the employees. Clarkson’s words reflected her surprise at being treated as if she could not afford items in the shop and included a sardonic comparison to Julia Roberts’ character in the movie *Pretty Woman*.
In her post, Clarkson wrote, “Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it.” She continued by stating the experience was baffling and proclaimed, “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale.”
In response to Clarkson’s remarks, Art of Play issued a statement the following day via Instagram. The shop explained that Clarkson had inquired specifically about Molly, a one-of-a-kind mechanical bird that they noted was not for sale as it is permanently attached to the store’s wall. They claimed to have suggested a similar automaton, priced at £2,000, which Clarkson allegedly did not wait to see before leaving the store.
The situation intensified when the store declared their willingness to contact the creator of Molly about acquiring a similar piece for £15,000 after explaining its status to Clarkson during her visit. They further clarified that Clarkson spent approximately five minutes in the store but did not engage in a more extensive conversation regarding her options.
However, Clarkson later corroborated the store’s initial price of £15,000 on her Instagram Stories, calling attention to the price tag on Molly. In an unexpected twist, the store later announced they would be raising the price of the automaton to £15 million, suggesting the increased interest was a response to the public outcry over the incident.
The co-owner of Art of Play, Adam Rubin, commented, “So many people asked about it that we put a price on it, but we talked to the creator when he came to fix the machine. If someone showed serious interest, we would reach out to him about getting them an automaton.” Rubin’s words illustrated the bizarre escalation of the situation, which has garnered much attention online.
Reports suggest that Clarkson’s willingness to go public about her negative experience is quite unusual. A source connected to the singer disclosed that the situation had clearly frustrated her. “She’s usually very private, and public drama like this isn’t her. She’s clearly so ticked off that she couldn’t keep quiet about it,” the source noted, indicating that many were surprised by how far the issue has developed.
As online discussions continue, both Clarkson and Art of Play appear to hope for a resolution. The store expressed the intention to clear the air with Clarkson, wishing for a future where they could all reflect on the misunderstanding with a sense of humour.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by public figures in seemingly mundane situations and how interactions can quickly spiral into larger discussions about customer service, celebrity culture, and public perceptions.
