Collin Gosselin, the son of reality television stars Kate and Jon Gosselin, has made serious allegations against his mother in his recently published memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood.” The 22-year-old claims that he experienced physical abuse during his formative years, shedding light on a challenging past that has resurfaced following his family’s public life.

In his book, Collin describes instances of physical aggression from Kate, stating that when she was angry, she would often “grab me by the ear,” with some encounters escalating to physical violence. He recalls a specific incident where Kate reportedly yanked his ear so forcefully that it left him in pain. “It felt hot and tight, like it was being pulled even when no one was touching it,” he explained in his memoir, illustrating the enduring impact of his mother’s actions.

Reflecting on his experiences, Collin notes that he struggled to communicate the true nature of his home environment to authorities. He recounts a time when a concerned teacher noticed his injuries and took him to see a school counsellor. Although an investigation by Children and Youth Services (CYS) was opened, Collin felt intimidated and fearful of potential repercussions from his mother. “If I say yes, I’m dead,” he recalled thinking at the time, as he chose to protect himself by downplaying the situation.
Collin claims that social workers visited the Gosselin home multiple times over the following year; however, during these interactions, he only managed to communicate his feelings about the household dynamics on one occasion. He later learned that numerous complaints had been made regarding the family’s circumstances, which had been documented as concerns by third parties observing the situation.
The memoir details further alleged mistreatment, highlighting that, following the CYS visit, Collin was removed from school and confined to a basement room that he described as “a small holding cell.” According to him, his mother restricted his freedom, installing cameras to monitor his movements and ensuring that he could only request permission to use the bathroom.
Collin states that his time in the basement lasted for a prolonged period, claiming he spent about 70% of his days confined there while subjected to what he perceived as continuous control. His accounted experiences included not only physical discipline but also emotional manipulation. “Sometimes she’d slap me across the cheek, pull my ear, or smack me upside the head,” he explained, amid a routine that enforced loneliness and isolation.
In an unfortunate turn of events following his attempt to escape, Collin described being subjected to hospitalization and later transferred to a behavioural health facility known as Fairmount. He alleges that while there, he endured further abuse before ultimately being moved to another residential institution, George Junior Republic. His father, Jon Gosselin, is reported to have fought diligently to secure Collin’s release from these facilities, aiming to provide him with a safe home.
Kate Gosselin has publicly addressed the situation on her social media, stating that the measures taken in their household were done in consultation with healthcare specialists to protect the family. In 2023, she insisted that all actions were driven by expert recommendations, seeking to provide a safe environment for all family members.
In response to the claims made in the memoir, Kate’s lawyer has indicated that the intentions behind her actions were protective rather than harmful. He asserted that she acted out of a desire to safeguard against what he termed “troubled behaviour.”
As Collin continues to share his story, he emphasises the importance of acknowledging the complex and often painful reality of his upbringing. In recent interviews, he expressed a desire to reassure his younger self, now that he has grown and found a voice to advocate for those who may have gone through similar experiences.
“In the Shadow of Eight” is currently available for purchase at various retailers, providing an in-depth look at Collin’s journey and the challenges faced within his family dynamic. The memoir serves both as a personal narrative and a broader commentary on the implications of child welfare, raising awareness about the signs of abuse, and underlining the importance of speaking out against such experiences.
