The Gainesville Police Department reported that the incident transpired on Wednesday, October 7, when a 68-year-old woman, who was attempting to park her Ford Edge, inadvertently drove over the curb, hitting both father and son. The police noted that the vehicle left the roadway and struck them as they were walking towards a Publix supermarket within the complex.

Despite swift action from bystanders who administered CPR, Knox was critically injured and subsequently transported by air to a children’s hospital in Atlanta. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of first responders and medical personnel, he passed away due to his injuries. Meanwhile, Samuel Skelton was fortunate to escape without serious injuries and did not require medical treatment following the collision.
The tragedy has elicited widespread condolences, with the Gainesville Police Department expressing deep sorrow for the Skelton family and highlighting the profound impact of such an event on a close-knit community. The department extended its sympathies in a public statement, offering support to all affected, including those within the Gainesville Fire Department where Samuel is employed.
Recognising the exceptional circumstances faced by the Skelton family, the Gainesville Fire Department initiated an online fundraiser to assist them during this harrowing time. The department emphasised the exceptional character of Samuel and Kiana Skelton in a statement circulated on social media, describing them as “humble, caring, and genuine.” They encouraged the community to rally around the family with love, prayers, and donations.
The public has responded with an outpouring of support, as the fundraiser aims to provide the family with some financial relief amidst their grief. The department’s message further resonated with the reality faced by emergency service personnel, stating that while they are trained to handle traumatic situations, the emotional weight of suffering within one’s own department is particularly heavy.
As investigations continue, the police are looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident and its causes, but no charges have been reported against the driver at this stage. The focus remains on supporting the grieving family as they come to terms with their loss.
Knox Skelton’s untimely passing is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of accidents that can alter the course of families forever. With Knox just shy of celebrating his second birthday, his life and more importantly, its abrupt ending, leave a significant impact on his family, friends, and the community at large.
The Gainesville community is rallying together to support the Skelton family as they navigate one of life’s most devastating experiences, underscoring the importance of compassion and solidarity in times of tragedy. As more details emerge, the focus remains on honouring Knox’s memory and providing comfort to those left behind.
