A 24-year-old man from Texas, Sahil Jilani, has tragically lost his life in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as confirmed by his family. Jilani was reported missing after being last seen at the Riverstone Campground in Townsend, Tennessee, on the evening of 5 October. His disappearance sparked concern and led park authorities to launch a search operation.

Two days after Jilani was last seen, his vehicle was located abandoned at the Abrams Falls trailhead. This discovery raised alarms, leading to an intensified search effort. Tragically, on 8 October, his sister, Asma Jilani Bustamante, took to social media to announce the recovery of her brother’s body, confirming that the search efforts had come to a heartbreaking conclusion.
In her emotionally charged post, Bustamante wrote, “With extremely heavy hearts, we share the news that the search for Sahil has ended, and he has passed away.” She asked for privacy for their family during this challenging time, imploring others to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they process their loss.
Reports indicate that Jilani was involved in a swimming incident at Abrams Falls, where strong currents are notoriously dangerous. Bustamante described the incidents leading to her brother’s death as a “sudden, tragic accident,” highlighting the deceptive nature of the falls. She warned others that the area had a history of severe drowning hazards, noting that the strong undercurrents could make rescue efforts extremely challenging.
Bustamante further explained that the tremendous pressure of the falls, combined with the depth of the plunge pool — which reaches about 25 feet — create potent undercurrents that can sweep even experienced swimmers away. Her words serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by beautiful yet perilous natural waterways.
The family is grappling with profound grief following Jilani’s passing. According to his sister, he had always wanted to support his family, with aspirations of helping their mother retire and aiding their father with dental care. Recently becoming an uncle, he was particularly enthusiastic about sharing his passion for fitness and teaching his niece mixed martial arts.
Bustamante noted that Jilani had a big heart and was devoted to his loved ones. “Having so many plans to care for those he loved,” she stated, “his absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts.” His family was prompted to raise concerns about his whereabouts largely due to their mother’s instinct that something was amiss, given that Jilani typically kept in touch regularly.
Once Jilani’s car was identified, officials conducted a search of the area, eventually finding his belongings, including his phone, keys, and clothes in proximity to the falls. Dive teams worked meticulously to recover his body from the water the day after his disappearance was reported.
Expressing gratitude to the community and law enforcement for their assistance during the search, Bustamante also urged individuals visiting similar natural sites to remain vigilant. “Being a strong swimmer does not make you immune to these dangers,” she cautioned. She underscored the importance of heeding warning signs and preparing adequately before venturing into remote areas, including sharing travel plans and having reliable means of communication.
To date, the National Park Service has not publicly confirmed Jilani’s death or provided further details related to the incident. The park, a stunning yet hazardous expanse straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, has long been regarded for its breathtaking scenery, although the dangers it harbours are underlined by incidents such as this.
As the Jilani family mourns their loss, they hope that Sahil’s story will serve as a crucial alert to others about the hidden perils that natural bodies of water can pose. Their heartfelt message is a reminder to others to respect the beauty of nature while remaining mindful of the risks that can be involved. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death continues, while the family navigates their profound grief.
