The once-a-day direct route operated by PSA Airlines CRJ-700 under American Eagle was a source of great pride and honour for the citizens of Wichita. Mayor Wu shared the sentiment of the community, stating that they were “very honored to have gotten that flight.” The flight crash included several members of the U.S. Figure Skating team, who were returning from the National Development Camp associated with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships held in Wichita.

As the tragic incident unfolded, the figure skating world mourned the loss of champions, including 1994 pairs figure skating world champions Evgenia Shishkova, 52, and Vadim Naumov, 55.
