Idina Menzel has recently opened up about her experience during her time on the popular musical series, *Glee*, revealing the personal challenges she faced as a new mother. Attending the New York Comic Con on 8th October, the 55-year-old actress reflected on her role as Shelby Corcoran, the biological mother of lead character Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele.

Menzel explained that she had given birth to her son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, just three months prior to taking on the role of Shelby. This significant life change brought about not only the joys of motherhood but also a struggle with self-esteem as she navigated her professional responsibilities in a demanding environment.

“The experience was a bit complicated,” said Menzel, recalling how the physical changes from childbirth affected her perception of herself. She candidly shared with New York Magazine that while she was excited about her new job, she felt out of place in her environment. “I had to be in my trailer pumping my milk while Lea Michele and the whole crew were young and hot,” she noted. The disparity left Menzel feeling insecure, particularly with the added pressures of fitting into her character’s costumes during filming.

Playing the role of a show choir coach, Menzel, then 38, found herself in a complex age dynamic. While she was portraying Rachel Berry’s mother, Michele was only 23 at the time. This age difference, combined with the pressures of new motherhood, left Menzel grappling with how she was perceived both in her work and as a parent. She described the situation as challenging for her ego, stating, “You’re worried you’re not going to work again, and then people hire you to be someone’s mother when you probably should be their older sister.”
Despite her insecurities, Menzel was committed to embracing this opportunity in her career. She acknowledged the excitement she felt about working alongside renowned showrunner Ryan Murphy and being part of a show that resonated with so many viewers. “I was excited to work and be a part of that hit show,” she confirmed.
Menzel welcomed Walker on 2nd September 2009 with her then-husband, fellow Broadway actor Taye Diggs. The couple’s amicable split in 2014 demonstrated their commitment to co-parenting, with Menzel emphasising the importance of putting their son’s needs first. “Your child comes first, that’s all,” she expressed in a 2016 interview. “You have to get past your own egos, and you never talk bad about each other.”
In a reflective moment from her journey into motherhood, the actress described having a child as “liberating.” Menzel acknowledged that becoming a parent shifted her focus away from herself towards nurturing her son and attending to his needs. “And you screw up every day in some way. But if you come from a place of love and forgiveness and try to be a stable, strong sort of rooted tree for your kids, you’re not going to break,” Menzel elaborated in an interview with PEOPLE in 2021.
Through her struggles, Menzel has been candid about the pressures of managing a high-profile career while raising a child. Her transparency regarding the challenges she faced during her time on *Glee* resonates with many working parents who encounter similar hurdles. She remains an advocate for prioritising familial relationships above all else, underscoring the notion of unconditional love and support in parenting.
Idina Menzel’s openness about her experiences serves to highlight the complexities of balancing personal and professional life, particularly in the public eye. It also encourages a broader conversation on self-acceptance and the realities faced by mothers returning to work, illustrating that even as stars, they too battle with self-image and the stresses of parenthood. As she reflects on her time on *Glee*, Menzel’s journey stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring bond of family.
