In June, Haley Cavinder, the former college basketball star, exchanged vows with Jake Ferguson, tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, following a three-year romance that began with an unexpected direct message. During a recent episode of PEOPLE’s WAG World series, Cavinder reflected on their journey as a couple, providing insights into their first connection that initiated a lasting bond.
The couple’s love story began when Cavinder received a surprising DM from Ferguson, where he inquired about her golf game. Speaking with host Skyler Caruso, the 25-year-old shared, “He just DMed me and asked how my golf game was.” Originally from Indiana but raised in Arizona, Cavinder played at both Fresno State University and the University of Miami, where proximity to Ferguson’s family set the stage for their initial meetings.
Recalling her path to romance, Cavinder said, “When I first met Jake, I had just graduated from the University of Miami.” She mentioned the geographical closeness between their families, as her grandparents lived in Naples, while Ferguson’s family had a residence in Fort Myers Beach. Yet, despite these serendipitous circumstances, Cavinder admitted she was not actively seeking a relationship when they first connected.
“I wasn’t looking for anything, and I don’t know if Ferg was at that time either,” she noted. Their connection quickly developed into a meaningful relationship, with the couple spending ten consecutive days together early on. “He’s just a good, down-to-earth human being,” she remarked, highlighting Ferguson’s character as a significant factor in their blossoming relationship.
Cavinder, who boasts an impressive social media following of over five million across Instagram and TikTok, praised Ferguson for his grounded nature, which counters common stereotypes associated with athletes. “Right away I was just like, wow, outside of who he is on the field, dating athletes in this space, you never know what you’re going to get,” she shared. “I found a good one. My first impression is still who he is today.”
Haley’s twin sister, Hanna, joined her in the interview and candidly expressed her initial skepticism about Ferguson. “I thought it was fake, really, because I thought that’s way too good to be true,” she admitted, noting that she wanted to wait six months to see how their relationship would unfold. The bond the twins share is notably strong, affecting their choice of partners. Cavinder confirmed that Hanna’s approval played a significant role in her dating decisions.
“Hanna’s the most important human being in my life, and I think that she knows me best,” Cavinder said. This sentiment underscores the close-knit relationship between the sisters, emphasising the importance of compatibility not just with Haley but also with her family.
Ferguson ultimately won over Hanna, passing her six-month evaluation, as he not only demonstrated his affection towards Cavinder but also proved his dedication over time. “Now, I mean, he still shows it to this day… with the rings!” she added with a laugh, proudly pointing to the engagement and wedding rings.
Ferguson proposed to Cavinder in an idyllic beach setting in April 2025, and the couple celebrated their nuptials one year later on June 20 at the prestigious Biltmore Hotel in Miami. The ceremonies showcased their modern love story, blending athletic accomplishments with personal milestones.
Reflecting on her marriage, Cavinder expressed satisfaction with their life together, stating, “Married life is great… I think that it’s just what we were doing.” She noted that the transition from dating to marriage has felt natural to her. “I still feel like we’re dating, but we’re married,” she elaborated, citing the seriousness of their union and the creation of their new family, which now includes their pet puppy, Boozer.
Although they have entered married life, Cavinder maintains that their relationship remains as joyful and lively as ever, embracing both the changes and consistencies that come with a shared commitment. The couple continues to build their story, surrounded by love, partnership, and support.
