According to reports, Pearson, a U.S. Marine, was taking part in Marine Raider training at Naval Air Station Key West when he was reported missing. Authorities later discovered him unresponsive in the water, prompting an investigation into the incident by MARSOC and other relevant bodies.

Major Johnny Henderson of MARSOC confirmed the circumstances surrounding Pearson’s death. He expressed sorrow over the loss, stating that it profoundly affected the command and the community. Major General Michael A. Brooks also shared his condolences, remarking that Pearson embodied the spirit of a Marine and had taken on the significant challenge of becoming a Marine Raider. “Captain Pearson was one of us,” he expressed, adding that his dedication and professionalism were inspiring to those who had served alongside him.

Pearson’s journey began on the baseball field, where he had a notable career as a high school player. He played for St. John’s Catholic High School Baseball team from 2012 to 2014 and was subsequently selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 34th round of the MLB Draft. After high school, he furthered his baseball career at VCU from 2015 to 2018, where he established himself as a talented pitcher. During this time, he recorded an impressive 0.96 ERA as a freshman and maintained a 1.50 ERA as a junior in 2017. He also played for the Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts on two occasions.
After completing his college career, Pearson made the transition into military service, eventually being appointed as a captain in January 2025. His commitment to both his athletic and military careers highlighted his dedication to excellence, whether on the field or in service to his country.
In response to his untimely passing, VCU Baseball paid tribute to Pearson on social media, expressing their heartbreak over the loss of a valued teammate and friend. Their heartfelt message conveyed condolences to Pearson’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Pearson is survived by his wife and two daughters, adding a personal layer of tragedy to his death. He will be remembered not only for his achievements in sports but also for his commitment to serving his country as a Marine.
MARSOC and the Marine Corps have been contacted for further comments regarding the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of Garrett Pearson’s death. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with military training and the deep sense of loss felt by his family, friends, and the community he served.
As investigations continue, the legacy of Garrett Pearson will undoubtedly remain in the hearts of those who knew him, both as an accomplished athlete and a devoted service member.
