Newly released bodycam footage provides a distressing glimpse into the aftermath of a tragic shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. The incident, which occurred on 6 January 2023, involved a six-year-old student who shot first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner during a reading session. The footage, previously sealed and revealed as part of Zwerner’s civil case against the school’s assistant principal, Ebony Parker, shows both the chaos following the incident and the confrontation with the young shooter.

In this disturbing clip, the unnamed student can be seen being held by teacher Amy Kovac while police officers ask questions in an attempt to piece together what had happened. Despite his young age, the boy displays aggressive behaviour, cursing and threatening officers as they approach. “Y’all want a f—ing piece of me?” he shouts, indicative of the severe challenges he presents even after the shooting.

The events leading up to the shooting have since been the subject of significant scrutiny. Zwerner’s lawsuit alleges that Kovac had alerted Parker to earlier threats made by the student, suggesting that the potential for violence was known and inadequately addressed. Kovac confirms during the footage that she was the one who called 911 after hearing the gunshot, emphasising her concern for the boy’s well-being following the chaotic incident.
The inquiry into the shooting revealed that the child had obtained the firearm from his mother’s handbag. Reports indicate that he had climbed onto a drawer to reach the top of a dresser where the purse was stored. Zwerner’s lawsuit states that the student had a history of violent behaviour, having previously attacked both classmates and teachers. This troubling background raises questions about the safety protocols in place at the school and the oversight of troubled students.
During the footage, Kovac tries to calm the situation, asking, “Turn to me. When you shot the gun, did anything hurt you?” while pointing out the gun residue on the boy’s hands. However, his reactions are defiant, and he lashes out in anger, even telling the police, “It’s over there, whore,” when questioned about the firearm. Despite Kovac’s attempts to intervene, the child continues to use foul language and express aggression, prompting officers to step in.
In November 2025, a jury awarded Zwerner $10 million in her lawsuit, highlighting the scale of the physical and emotional pain she has endured since the shooting left her with enduring injuries. Zwerner’s plight has only intensified public discourse around gun safety, mental health support for students, and the responsibilities of educational institutions in safeguarding both staff and pupils.
The consequences of the shooting extended beyond the school as well. Deja Taylor, the mother of the young shooter, was sentenced to two years in prison for felony child neglect, stemming from her failure to secure the firearm properly. Additionally, she received a concurrent sentence after pleading guilty to additional charges related to drug use while owning a firearm.
Presently, the child is being cared for by his great-grandfather and is attending a different educational institution, while Zwerner has stepped away from her teaching career due to the trauma of the event. This incident has sparked national conversations regarding the need for enhanced safety measures in schools as well as the urgent need for better support systems for children exhibiting behavioural problems.
As the community continues to process the repercussions of the shooting, there remains an ongoing demand for accountability and reform. The explosive footage serves as a sobering reminder of the complexities surrounding youth violence and the dire consequences it can hold for all involved.
