According to his wife, Audrey Lara, Trey was in good spirits shortly before his collapse. She shared that she had seen him smiling and looking well as she gave him a kiss around the 18-mile mark. Afterward, she made her way to the finish line to await his arrival. Sadly, he was taken to hospital but did not survive. Trey passed away surrounded by family just before reaching what would have been his 25th birthday.

Audrey described the overwhelming grief faced by her family in the wake of this tragedy. She reflected on the surreal nature of the loss, stating, “The grief is coming in waves, where one moment it still doesn’t feel real.” Friends and family have expressed their shock and sorrow over his sudden death, underscoring the profound impact he had on their lives.

In honour of Trey’s memory, a GoFundMe campaign has been established and has already raised over £79,000 within days. The funds are intended to assist with funeral costs, hospital bills, and other expenses that his family may incur during this difficult time.
Trey was well-known for his commitment to faith and community service, with many describing him as a person who lived life with purpose. His loved ones highlighted his unwavering faith, as well as his distinctive sense of humour and style. Friends remember him for forging connections with people effortlessly, as well as possessing a passion for photography and a love of film and food.
The Lara family had ambitious plans for the future, having recently launched a summer camp project called Camp Genesis, which was a dream for Trey. Audrey recounted how her husband was a visionary, always pursuing his goals with determination. “He was the biggest dreamer… he said, ‘I will do this, and we got it done,’” she said, illustrating his leadership and enthusiasm.
Trey had recently taken on a formal role in ministry with the Foursquare Church, continuing his commitment to youth mentorship and support in the community. His role as a youth pastor was a significant part of his life, and it fulfilled his desire to make a positive impact on young people’s lives.
The organisers of the Portland Marathon acknowledged the incident, confirming that a medical emergency had occurred during the event but refraining from providing further details about the individual involved. Crystian Kumnick, managing director of Motiv Sports, which oversees the marathon, expressed gratitude for the first responders who rushed to assist.
The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, as many have come forward to offer condolences and assistance. The GoFundMe page has served as both a means of financial support and a space for sharing memories of Trey. The family has expressed their deep appreciation for the prayers and kindness directed towards them during this heartbreaking period.
As the Lara family navigates through their loss, they have asked for continued prayers and support from the wider community. Trey’s legacy of joy, faith, and community service will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
