A teenager has bravely returned home following a terrifying near-death experience after being struck by lightning while playing football with friends. The incident occurred on 23rd August at Sea and Sand Mobile Home Park in Boynton Beach, Florida, just days before the young boy celebrated his 14th birthday in hospital.

The quick response from local first responders proved critical in saving the life of Kevin. Deputy Claudia Abreu Perez was among the first on the scene and immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the unresponsive teen. “I saw him in the soccer field, lying on the floor while bystanders were doing CPR at the time,” Abreu Perez recounted. When she reached him, Kevin was described as “blue” and had no detectable pulse.

The deputy, who clearly made an immediate impact in a dire situation, worked tirelessly for nearly four minutes before managing to locate Kevin’s pulse. Her relief was palpable, as she later shared, saying, “I was very relieved,” after achieving this crucial milestone.

Abreu Perez continued to administer life-saving measures until Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived to take over. Throughout this ordeal, the teamwork and prioritisation of Kevin’s health were vital, highlighting the importance of training and preparedness in emergency situations.
After being discharged from hospital, Kevin had the opportunity to meet with the first responders who had played a significant role in his recovery. In a heartfelt reunion on 4th October, members of the emergency services presented Kevin and his family with a hot meal, along with gifts including football cleats and a new ball, which replaced items destroyed during the lightning strike.
The reunion included moments of joy and gratitude, with footage shared by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office showing Deputy Abreu Perez and her colleagues engaging in a friendly kickabout with the teenager. At one point in the video, the emotional atmosphere gave way to hugs as Kevin expressed his gratitude towards those who had helped save his life.
Despite the extraordinary nature of her actions, Deputy Abreu Perez humbly stated, “I don’t feel heroic or anything. I’m glad I was able to know how to do my job properly to save his life.” Her modesty reflects the training and instilled professionalism shared among first responders, who are often faced with critical situations that demand their expertise.
In the aftermath of this event, support for Kevin and his family has poured in from the community. A GoFundMe campaign has successfully raised over £4,000 to assist them as they navigate the challenges following the accident.
As Kevin returns to his life, the memory of this close brush with death serves as a reminder of both the unpredictable nature of life and the critical role that trained professionals can play in saving lives. The collaboration between bystanders and emergency personnel in this incident paints a picture of community spirit and resilience.
The encouragement from his reunion with rescue teams might provide Kevin with the strength to pursue his passion for football once more. As he stands on the threshold of recovery, this adolescent is set to embrace new opportunities, underscored by the unwavering support of those who came to his aid on that fateful day.
