A 72-year-old woman, Mary Beth Granbery, was located alive following a harrowing fall during a camping expedition in California. Granbery, who had embarked on a multi-day trip on 28 September, was reported missing on Saturday, 3 October, after failing to return to work, sparking concerns among her family.

Granbery’s camper van was discovered parked at the Cabin Creek Trailhead in Shasta County, prompting officials from both the Siskiyou and Shasta County sheriff’s departments to initiate a search operation. The decision to search for Granbery came after her loved ones grew increasingly worried about her safety, particularly as she had not been in touch since her trip began.

Search efforts intensified over the weekend, leading searchers to conduct a thorough examination of the area around the trailhead. Their efforts bore fruit on Sunday, 4 October, when they found Granbery at the bottom of a steep embankment along Cabin Creek, approximately three miles from the trail and around 300 yards off the marked footpath.
According to reports from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, Granbery had suffered multiple serious injuries from her fall and was also exposed to the elements. Spokesperson Sage Milestone indicated that when rescuers discovered her, she was disoriented and unable to communicate verbally, having sustained a severe knee injury during her ordeal.
A search team commenced the operation at around 10:30 am, with a small group assigned to cover various drainages. It was during this search that Granbery was located. Due to the extent of her injuries, the California Highway Patrol was called upon to assist in her rescue. She was subsequently airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for medical treatment.
Investigators speculate that Granbery may have fallen while attempting to hike off the main trail, potentially in search of a fishing spot. Although it is believed she may have been outdoors for several days, the precise timeline of her disappearance remains uncertain.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office expressed its profound gratitude to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, local search volunteers, and the highway patrol team for their dedication and effort in securing Granbery’s rescue. Their collaborative work was integral in ensuring her safe return to her family.
In addition to thanking the volunteer teams, officials acknowledged the vital information provided by Granbery’s family and friends, which significantly aided in expediting the search. The community’s support and swift action played a crucial role in the successful outcome of this intense search operation.
Mary Beth Granbery’s story serves as a reminder of the risks associated with hiking and camping in remote areas. Meanwhile, rescuers have highlighted the importance of preparation and communication for those engaging in outdoor activities, underlining the need for adventurers to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones.
