Authorities are intensifying their efforts to locate Dilan Shaan Ashar, a 22-year-old student from the University of Maryland who has been reported missing. Last seen in the early hours of 2 October, Ashar’s case has prompted urgent appeals from both police and his family, who are desperate for information regarding his whereabouts.

Ashar was last identified via surveillance cameras at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time on campus, specifically in the vicinity of the Terrapin Trail Garage. Earlier that morning, he was recorded leaving his residence around 2 a.m. Despite an extensive search operation that followed his disappearance, he remains unaccounted for.
In a heartfelt video shared by the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), his mother expressed her deep concern and love for her son. “Dilan, we love you so much, and we hope you are safe,” she said in the message recorded on 6 October, four days post his last sighting. She urged anyone with information to come forward, adding, “If you see this or anyone else sees this, please call us or call 911. We are waiting for you.”
Communication between Ashar and his parents ceased on the evening of 1 October, around 6 p.m., raising alarm amongst his family when they could not contact him. His mother disclosed that at the time of his disappearance, Ashar did not possess his mobile phone, wallet, or any identification, further complicating the search for him.
The UMPD have undertaken a detailed search of the area surrounding the garage, spanning approximately 110 acres, on 4 October. This search involved nearly 50 first responders and nine search dogs. Additional measures were taken that afternoon when officials deployed a drone to scan the local golf course area. Despite these extensive efforts, the search teams have not uncovered any leads regarding Ashar’s whereabouts.
As police began a thorough examination of campus video recordings, they released new images showing Ashar outside the garage earlier on the day of his disappearance. Described as a “kind and thoughtful young man,” Ashar reportedly has a fervent passion for sports and cooking, characteristics highlighted by his family in their public appeal.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing around 185 pounds, he was last seen wearing a black University of Maryland hoody, grey sweatpants, and white trainers. A description of his attire has been distributed in hopes of further assisting in the search.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of community involvement in their search efforts. They encourage anyone with potential information about Ashar to contact the UMPD at 301-405-3555 or to submit tips anonymously via their website. “Every bit of information can help,” the police emphasised, highlighting the urgent need for public assistance.
As the investigation continues, both the university community and local residents remain on high alert. Ashar’s case underscores the importance of looking out for one another and the potential impact of collective action in finding missing individuals. The university has expressed its commitment to supporting Ashar’s family during this distressing time.
The search for Dilan Shaan Ashar will continue until he is found, and the local community is being urged to remain vigilant and engaged in the efforts to locate him.
