Fans of the OneChicago franchise can look forward to an action-packed return as NBC revives its popular night of programming on Wednesday, 7 October. The anticipation for the new seasons of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. has been palpable, especially with unresolved cliffhangers from the previous season that left viewers eager for answers.

Chicago Med’s season 11 finale concluded with significant developments, including the birth of Dr. Hannah Asher and Dr. Dean Archer’s baby girl, Mabel. However, while Archer expressed his love towards Hannah, she refrained from responding in kind. The series is set to venture into uncharted territory as it introduces a new executive director, Mallory Sloan, portrayed by Alicia Coppola, which promises to shift the dynamics within the hospital.
Showrunner Allen MacDonald explained that the overarching theme for this season will revolve around navigating the unknown. “The season is about discomfort with change,” MacDonald stated, indicating that the staff must adapt to workplaces now influenced by new leadership, which poses challenges for both doctors and patients.
Amidst the turmoil, long-standing characters will face both personal and professional obstacles. For instance, the introduction of a new doctor could further complicate matters for an already chaotic hospital environment. The motto of the season appears to be embracing the unknown, thus setting the stage for intriguing developments as the story unfolds.
As Chicago Fire resumes, viewers will be treated to an immediate follow-up of the season 14 finale, which culminated in a catastrophic structure fire at Firehouse 51. With crew members in jeopardy, the stakes have never been higher. New showrunner Victor Teran revealed that the upcoming season will delve into the often-overlooked personal struggles faced by firefighters, emphasising the complexity of confronting both physical flames and emotional battles.
“Even though firefighters typically run towards danger in their line of work, it’s important to showcase that they may not always do so in their personal lives,” Teran explained. Following the intense fire scenario, the narrative will then skip ahead several months to explore the aftermath and how each character copes with their experiences and unresolved issues.
One of the central characters, Chief Kelly Severide, will bear the heavy burden of leadership in the wake of this disaster, reflecting on the demands that come with his position. As the crew begins to address personal demons alongside professional challenges, audiences can expect a deeper emotional connection to the characters.
In the realm of Chicago P.D., the opening of season 14 will tackle the fallout from season 13’s astonishing finale, where Imani discovered that her sister Shari was implicated in a murder. The show will shift forward three months, focusing on the repercussions of this revelation and how the team adapts to changing circumstances.
Showrunner Gwen Sigan hinted at the significance of themes such as reinvention and transition within the police force and for individual characters. “We are leaning into the truth that all our characters are encountering changes as they navigate new chapters in their lives,” Sigan said.
The season also prepares for the departure of original cast member LaRoyce Hawkins, known for his role as Kevin Atwater. Sigan assured viewers that his farewell will be an organic and fitting tribute that aligns with the character’s journey.
As OneChicago night kicks off on Wednesday, 7 October, the line-up will include Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET/PT and Chicago P.D. wrapping up the evening at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can expect high-stakes drama, emotional moments, and new challenges as the iconic series makes its long-anticipated return to the small screen.
