Johnson dedicated his entire NFL career to the Eagles, having been drafted as the fourth overall pick in 2013 from the University of Oklahoma. Throughout his time with the franchise, he established himself as a key player, contributing to the team’s success as a two-time Super Bowl champion. In his retirement announcement, Johnson expressed profound gratitude towards the city of Philadelphia, which he hailed as home and touted for its passionate fanbase.
“I have given it my all for 14 years,” Johnson wrote in his heartfelt message. He acknowledged the physical and mental demands of the sport, stating that he pushed himself to the limit to honour the legacy of those who came before him and to set a new benchmark for excellence within the organisation. Despite his desire to continue playing, Johnson noted that he had experienced considerable reflection regarding his priorities, leading him to conclude that it was time to step away from the game.

One of the driving factors behind Johnson’s decision relates to his mental wellbeing. He stressed the importance of being fully committed, both mentally and emotionally, to the game, and recognised that he was unable to do so at the present time. “Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health,” he stated. He underscored the need to devote more time to his family, which includes three children from his first marriage and his wife, Kelsey Holmer, whom he married in April.

Johnson fondly recalled his experiences of returning to Philadelphia as a World Champion on two occasions, describing it as an “ultimate privilege” that he will always cherish. Expressing appreciation to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie for providing him the opportunity to play in the NFL, he acknowledged the profound impact that the team had on his life. He particularly thanked his coaches and teammates, whom he considers lifelong friends.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni paid tribute to Johnson, recognising him as one of the finest players in the league, regardless of the less visible nature of his position. “Lane gives us so much ability to do different things because of who he is as a football player,” Sirianni remarked. Meanwhile, team owner Jeffrey Lurie praised Johnson as “an all-time Eagle” and one of the greatest to play his position in the history of the NFL.
Lurie emphasised Johnson’s longevity and consistency throughout numerous coaching changes, noting that he maintained an elite level of play throughout his career. He categorised the tackle’s combination of talent, strength, and football intelligence as something truly unique. Speculating on Johnson’s future, Lurie expressed confidence that he would ultimately be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Johnson’s retirement announcement comes shortly after he missed a game against the Los Angeles Rams, further highlighting the timing of his decision. Over the span of his career, he achieved remarkable statistics, including a stretch of 1,405 straight pass-blocking snaps without a recorded knockdown.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Johnson has been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness. He openly discussed his battles with depression and anxiety, revealing that he missed three games in 2021 due to withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing antidepressant medication. His advocacy work did not go unnoticed, as the Eagles named him their Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee in 2023.
As Lane Johnson embarks on this new chapter of his life, he leaves behind a storied legacy with the Eagles and an unwavering commitment to both his family and mental health. The impact of his contributions on and off the field will be remembered by fans and teammates alike, ensuring that he remains a significant figure in the franchise’s history. For many, Johnson is not just an athlete, but a symbol of strength and resilience, exemplifying the importance of taking care of one’s mental health and prioritising family above all.
