Two baggage handlers at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport have been arrested under suspicion of stealing a luxury watch valued at approximately £79,050. The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Thaddeus Porter and 18-year-old Morris Robinson, were charged with one felony count of theft, as confirmed by local law enforcement officials.

The incident occurred on 24 September when a male traveller arrived in New Orleans from Los Angeles. The passenger reported to authorities that he had packed a Patek Philippe Aquanaut watch within his checked luggage, specifically concealed inside a pair of shoes. Upon his arrival, the victim discovered that both of his locked suitcases had been opened and that the watch was missing.

Worrying about the breach of security, the victim contacted airport authorities. Investigators from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office quickly began to scrutinise the airport’s security camera footage. Their review led to the identification of the accused workers, Porter and Robinson, who were both employed by the airline that the victim had flown with. However, as of now, the specific airline has not been disclosed.

Authorities apprehended the two men on the same day the theft was reported. They were booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Centre and subsequently released the following day after each posting a bond of £25,000. Both defendants are expected to attend a court hearing scheduled for 23 November.
Under Louisiana law, theft of items exceeding a value of £25,000 can result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years, alongside potential fines reaching £50,000. Given the high value of the stolen watch, the legal ramifications faced by the accused could be severe, should they be found guilty.
At present, no information regarding legal representation for Porter and Robinson has been made available. The airport’s spokesperson insisted that all queries should be directed towards the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, which has not yet provided a detailed comment on the matter.
This incident has raised concerns about luggage security at major airports, particularly regarding the handling of valuable items by staff members. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises travellers to keep their valuables with them at all times rather than placing them in checked luggage. This measure is intended to prevent theft and loss during air travel, making it clear that passengers should exercise caution when packing luxury items.
As the case unfolds, it serves as a reminder to all travellers about the importance of vigilance when travelling with high-value possessions. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full details surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served. Further developments are anticipated as the court date approaches, with local media continuing to monitor the situation closely.
With the rising number of air travel incidents, both passengers and airport authorities are prompted to reassess security measures and protocols in an effort to minimise risks associated with baggage handling. As the date of the court appearance nears, the attention will likely shift towards how such cases can be prevented in the future, ensuring that travellers can feel secure in the handling of their personal belongings while flying.
