At 56 years old, Lillard candidly admits that he does not feel valued by Hollywood as an artist. When asked if he believes he is appreciated in his profession, the actor firmly responds, “No. Not really.” Lillard elaborates on his perspective, stating that Hollywood tends to seek out movie stars who comfortably fit into conventional roles, which he does not. “They sorta want to be able to put you in a bubble,” he explains, while adding, “I’ve never fit in that little, perfect bubble.”

Lillard’s journey in the industry spans nearly four decades, with notable performances that have seen him cast primarily as “the best friend” or “the comic relief.” He reflects on his breakout role in *Scream*, released in 1996, noting how he has often been overshadowed in the perception of greatness. “But they felt they could replace me,” he states, hinting at the industry’s tendency to overlook his contributions.
Despite his varied roles, including appearances in acclaimed projects such as *Twin Peaks* and *The Descendants*, Lillard feels he has not had the opportunity to be recognised as a leading figure in a major blockbuster. He expresses frustration, wondering, “Why didn’t I ever get a shot to be that guy on top of a $20 million movie?” He suggests that the reason lies not in his talent or popularity but rather in a lack of understanding from those in decision-making positions in Hollywood.
Looking ahead, Lillard stars in the new adaptation of *Carrie* on Prime Video, which he hopes will resonate with audiences. He points to his “sneaky fan base” as a testament to the connection he has forged with viewers over the years. He observes the loyal crowds that gather at conventions, acknowledging that both younger and older fans appreciate his work. “I think that people really like me,” he says, underlining a sense of pride in the diverse audience that identifies with him.
Lillard also believes that his unique energy on set contributes significantly to creative collaborations. He claims, “I bring an energy to set that they don’t understand and will never understand,” adding that he is deeply dedicated and committed to his craft. This enthusiasm and dedication have nurtured his relationships with co-stars and crew alike.
Reflecting on his lengthy career, Lillard maintains a positive outlook despite his earlier frustrations regarding recognition. “I’m approaching 40 years in the business,” he notes, recognising that he has shifted his perspective over time. In his younger years, he admits to feeling overshadowed by other actors, such as his former roommate Paul Rudd, who has achieved a higher level of fame. He recalls, “I lived with Paul Rudd for two years… I was always in the shadow of Paul Rudd, no matter how famous I got.”
Through his experiences, Lillard acknowledges the competitive nature of show business, which has at times caused internal challenges. “For the longest time, I had a really hard time competing against other people,” he confesses, highlighting the personal struggles that come with his profession.
As Matthew Lillard continues to navigate his career, he remains hopeful for new opportunities that align with his artistic identity. His candid reflections reveal both the challenges and triumphs of a dedicated performer committed to his craft, even as he seeks to carve out a place for himself in an ever-evolving industry.
