The collision transpired at approximately 6:13 a.m. local time, as students were en route to Winter Haven High School. At the time of the accident, the bus was carrying 39 individuals, including 37 students, the bus driver, and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, video evidence indicated that the bus was travelling eastbound on Lucerne Park Road when a Chevrolet Malibu, heading in the opposite direction, veered across the centre line and collided with the bus. The impact was severe, with the Malibu reportedly ripping a wheel from the bus and causing it to cross into oncoming traffic, leading to a head-on collision with a nearby Jeep. This incident resulted in the bus flipping into a ditch while the Jeep caught fire.
Sheriff Judd described the morning as “terrible” and “tragic,” highlighting the severe consequences of the crash, which took two lives—one being a young female student. No further details about the victims have been released at this stage of the investigation.
Reports indicate that one additional person from the accident remains in a critical condition, with local law enforcement recognising the severity of the situation. Sheriff Judd remarked on the narrow scope of fatalities, noting, “The silver lining is there weren’t more fatalities than there were. But to have one fatality is one too many, and the loss of a beautiful high school girl is heartbreaking.”
Polk County Schools Superintendent Fred Heid addressed the media following the incident, expressing profound sorrow for those affected. He recognised the extraordinary support of first responders, stating, “We are very fortunate that more students were not seriously injured, including the driver. No one will ever understand how heavy this weighs in our hearts.”
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is currently ongoing, with no arrests made thus far. Sheriff Judd confirmed that the driver of the Malibu is cooperating with authorities and was en route to work when the collision occurred.
In response to the incident, the Polk County Public Schools district released a statement on social media, describing it as “devastating news” and emphasising the district’s thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families during this challenging time.
The response from the local community has been one of shock and mourning, as many grapple with the loss of life in what should have been a routine school day. Authorities have encouraged those impacted by the tragedy to seek support as they navigate the emotional toll this accident has inflicted.
As details continue to emerge, the focus remains on providing assistance to the families of the victims and ensuring the well-being of the students who endured this harrowing experience. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues to urge anyone with information related to the investigation to come forward to aid in their inquiries.
