Rebecca Yarros, the acclaimed author known for her bestselling ‘Empyrean’ series, has recently released a companion novel titled ‘Threshing Day’. The book, which hit the shelves on September 29, serves as an extension of the beloved series that includes titles such as ‘Fourth Wing’, ‘Iron Flame’, and ‘Onyx Storm’. Yarros celebrated the launch at a lively event held on October 1 in New York’s iconic One Times Square.

At the launch, Yarros engaged in a Q&A session with fellow author Jeneva Rose, where she shared insights into her latest work. The new novel is a compilation of 13 short stories told from the viewpoints of different first-year students at the Basgiath War College as they prepare for an event known as Threshing Day. This concept serves as a pivotal moment in the series, allowing for a deeper exploration of the characters’ desires and developments.

Yarros expressed her hopes for what readers might take away from this new addition. “I hope you notice that in each chapter, there’s a reason why their signets are their signets,” she remarked. “I hope that you see there’s a moment where they desperately want something, need something, and that’s where they develop from.” Her aim is for readers to step back into the richly crafted world of the Empyrean series, while also acknowledging the busy competitive landscape of book releases in the coming months.

The author emphasised that while ‘Threshing Day’ offers additional context and character backgrounds, it is not necessary for readers to engage with it in order to follow the narrative of the upcoming fourth novel in the series. “I would never do that to you guys as a readership,” Yarros reassured her audience, reinforcing her commitment to accessibility within her storytelling. She is currently hard at work on the next book, although a release date is yet to be confirmed.
During the event, Yarros hinted at her ambitions for future narrative arcs within the Empyrean universe and beyond. She stated, “I know where I want to go after this. It really just comes down to my time.” With six children to manage, including a son graduating from high school this year, the writer has a full plate, balancing family commitments with her literary pursuits.
Acknowledging the support from her husband Jason, who has been instrumental in managing household affairs while she focuses on her writing, Yarros reflected on her busy life. “I’ve taken time off, but I only took about four months off after I turned in Onyx. Then I wrote two graphic novels, Threshing Day and I’m working on book four,” she said, illustrating her relentless dedication to her craft. “I’m never not working,” she added, highlighting her commitment to maintaining a steady pace while ensuring quality in her writing.
As readers eagerly await her next projects, Yarros remains focused on finding the right balance between her family life and her writing career. “It’s really just a question of where I can write, where I’m healthy, what pace is healthy for me, and spending time with my family,” she noted, underlining her desire to bring her best work to the table while nurturing her familial relationships.
‘Threshing Day’ is now available at bookstores, marking an exciting expansion of the Empyrean universe. Yarros’s dedicated fan base and new readers alike are sure to be eager for the insights and character journeys presented within its pages.
