Jon Heder, known for his comedic performances, has shared his memorable experiences from filming the 2007 movie *Blades of Glory*, particularly regarding the distinctive costumes he wore as figure skater Jimmy MacElroy. Reflecting on the attire, Heder explained that beneath the vibrant, skintight costumes, he wore a specially designed undergarment known as a dance belt, which he described as “like a jockstrap with no support.”

The costumes, which were heavily influenced by the flamboyance of figure skater Johnny Weir, were both visually striking and physically uncomfortable. Heder, now 48, recounted the restrictive nature of the dance belt, emphasising that it provided minimal comfort. “It’s extremely uncomfortable, and it’s just riding right up there,” he admitted. Despite these discomforts, he expressed admiration for the costumes that helped define his character and enhance the film’s visual appeal.

In designing the outfits, which included an eye-catching peacock costume, Heder collaborated closely with the costume department, led by Julie Weiss. His choice was significantly inspired by Weir’s famous swan routine, where the figure skater donned a striking swan costume. Heder fondly remarked, “When I sat and talked with the costume designer… I mentioned the peacock. It just looked incredible.” He believed that the peacock, with its vibrant display, was a perfect representation of his flamboyant character.
Heder’s appreciation for the elaborate attire extended beyond aesthetics; he felt that the costumes played a crucial role in helping him embody the character each day. “It really helps you transform,” he said, acknowledging the powerful influence of the costumes on his performance.
In conversations with fellow cast member Will Ferrell during filming, both actors shared their experiences with wearing dance belts. Ferrell, who had previously worn one for his role in *Elf*, chimed in, joking that he wished Heder shared in the discomfort, saying, “I didn’t want you to feel left out.” This light-hearted exchange indicates the camaraderie and humour that surrounded their filming experience, despite the physical challenges they faced.
Outside of *Blades of Glory*, Heder is perhaps most widely recognised for his iconic role in the cult classic *Napoleon Dynamite*. Reflecting on his career, he expressed gratitude for the continued appreciation he receives from fans for his work in such memorable comedic roles. Heder said that being associated with beloved characters is a reflection of success and a sign of the positive reception of his work.
“People like to throw around terms like being typecast,” he noted, “but it feels great to be remembered and loved for something that you love to do.” His sentiments underscore a deep connection with his past projects, revealing that he derives personal satisfaction from the characters he has portrayed over the years.
As Heder continues to evolve in his artistic journey, he remains a beloved figure in the film industry, with audiences still embracing the personality and comedy he brought to his roles. His insights into the challenges of costume design and the impacts it has on performance offer a fascinating look behind the scenes of a film that has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Not only do these experiences highlight the rigours of acting but also the nuanced collaboration that takes place during the creative process, further enriching the stories we enjoy on screen.
Heder is now taking on new projects, including his role in Fel Beauty’s recent campaign. Yet, the unmistakable charm and comedic essence that defined his early work remain strong, with fans continually celebrating his contributions to the world of film.
