In a striking turn of events, Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing film of all time, edging out James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar, which had held the title since its 2021 re-release. This development follows Endgame’s limited theatrical re-release this autumn, which has significantly boosted its total box office earnings.

Originally released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame became an instant classic and garnered immense attention for concluding the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga. However, since its initial success, the film has had to contend with Avatar, which originally debuted in 2009 and dominated box office charts for a decade. The two cinematic giants have frequently exchanged places at the box office, with re-releases providing both films fresh opportunities for financial success.

The recent re-release, branded as Avengers: Endgame Encore, started on September 25 and offered audiences additional footage while also promoting the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, set to debut in December. Thanks to this limited run, Endgame has now amassed an astounding $2.925 billion globally. Meanwhile, Avatar has reached a cumulative total of $2.923 billion, making the competition between these two films closer than ever.
As reported by Variety, the latest re-release of Endgame has generated over $126 million worldwide, solidifying its comeback in the box office ranks. Prior to this, Avatar enjoyed a decade-long reign over its peers, until Endgame’s initial release thrust it into the top position in 2019. Avatar later reclaimed its title in 2021 with a strategic re-release that aligned with promotional activity for its long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.
The ongoing rivalry between these two films is further highlighted by their respective sequels. Avatar: The Way of Water has generated impressive earnings of $2.33 billion globally since its release, while Avengers: Infinity War, the film preceding Endgame, also remains a strong contender in the top 10 highest-grossing movies with $2.05 billion in revenue.
Marvel’s resurgence is amplified by the success of other projects such as the recently released Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The latest offering featuring Tom Holland opened to unprecedented box office numbers following its release on July 31. Brand New Day not only surpassed the financial achievements of Endgame domestically but has also earned over $2.5 billion globally, positioning it just behind Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens as the second-highest-grossing film in North America.
The timing of Endgame’s re-release is strategic, setting the stage for the eagerly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, which promises to reunite beloved characters as they face new multiverse challenges. Expectations are high for this film, and it is projected to be among the year’s biggest cinematic events.
In contrast, Avatar continues to expand its universe, with its third sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, scheduled for 2025. The franchise has several additional sequels in the works, with Avatar 4 slated for a December 21, 2029 release and Avatar 5 planned for December 19, 2031.
As both cinematic universes prepare for future releases, the competition is set to intensify further. With avid fans eager to support their favourite films, the battle for box office supremacy continues to captivate audiences around the globe. This latest shift in rankings serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of the film industry and the enduring popularity of superhero narratives.
