Tom Cruise’s latest project, *Digger*, has experienced a disappointing start since its premiere on 2 October. The dark comedy, which marks Cruise’s first non-franchise film in nine years, managed to gross only $20 million globally during its opening weekend. Out of this total, a mere $8 million was generated from about 3,321 theatres across North America, according to reports from *Variety*.

This initial performance raises concerns among industry analysts, who believe that *Digger* needed to achieve a domestic opening of at least $40 million to validate its substantial production costs, estimated to be between $160 million and $180 million. The film’s international reception also mirrors its domestic struggles, securing only $12 million from 73 different markets around the world.

*Digger* showcases Cruise in the role of Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world.” The plot follows his frantic attempts to assert himself as humanity’s saviour in the wake of an impending disaster that he has inadvertently unleashed. Directed by the acclaimed Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film promises a unique narrative, pushing both the director and Cruise into uncharted territory.
Speaking at a Q&A event in Los Angeles, Cruise emphasised the challenges faced while bringing his character to life. He expressed excitement about the collaboration with Iñárritu, noting that the film offered both of them a chance to delve deeper into their craft. “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro. And when you see this film, it’s totally original,” he stated during the event.
The film’s release trailer generated considerable interest when it debuted on 9 July, but the box office results reflect a disparity between anticipation and audience turnout. Critics are weighing whether the film’s marketing and timing may have affected its initial sales, especially given the prominence of blockbuster franchises in theatres at the moment.
*Digger* is particularly significant for Cruise, as it marks his return to standalone projects since *American Made* in 2017. During the past few years, Cruise has focused largely on popular franchises, including the *Mission: Impossible* series and his reprisal of the iconic role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in *Top Gun: Maverick*, which was released in 2022.
In addition to Cruise, the ensemble cast of *Digger* includes notable actors such as Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman. Despite its impressive cast and substantial budget, the film’s performance thus far has raised questions regarding its potential longevity in theatres.
As *Digger* continues its theatrical run, industry watchers will be closely monitoring its performance in the coming weeks. Analysts will be considering whether word-of-mouth, critical reviews, and audience reception can help improve its standing after a weak start. With the level of investment that has gone into the film, both producers and cast members will be hopeful that audiences will embrace this dark comedy as the weeks progress.
