Authorities on Long Island are investigating the discovery of human remains that are thought to belong to a woman missing since December 2025. The skeletal remains were found on the evening of October 1, 2026, in Plandome Pond Park, located in Manhasset. The discovery was made by members of a high school cross-country team who were training in the area.

The track team, which included a young Eagle Scout, noticed an unrecognised object in the underbrush while running through the park. Recognising the gravity of the find, the students promptly contacted emergency services. Nassau County Police responded swiftly to the scene and confirmed that the remains were female.
Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder indicated that investigators are engaged in efforts to identify the remains definitively. The circumstances surrounding the discovery do not appear to suggest any foul play. “We don’t believe it to be criminal in nature,” Ryder stated, reinforcing the initial assumptions regarding the case.

Authorities are particularly focused on identifying the remains as belonging to Shi Hua Xu, a 79-year-old woman who suffers from dementia. Xu wandered away from her home nearly ten months prior, and her family has been anxiously awaiting any news regarding her fate. At the time of her disappearance, she was last seen about four miles from the location where the skeletal remains were found.
The family of Xu has expressed their hope that the investigation will yield clear answers. They reported that investigators showed them an article of clothing found at the scene, which they believe belonged to Xu. However, formal identification from the Nassau County Medical Examiner’s office is still pending, and as of now, there has not been a response to inquiries from the office.
Mayor Kenneth Riscica of Plandome Heights has been in touch with the teenagers involved in the discovery and noted their emotional resilience in the aftermath of the find. He remarked on the response of the Eagle Scout, who expressed his hope that the discovery would bring closure to Xu’s family. Riscica conveyed that the young man’s maturity and empathy were commendable for someone of his age.

As investigations continue, the community is rallying around Xu’s family during this distressing time. The hope is that this tragic event may finally bring some answers and relief for those who have been left in the dark since her disappearance last year.
The police department has encouraged anyone with further information about Xu or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance to come forward, as every detail could be crucial in piecing together this unfortunate puzzle.
Authorities are also reminding the public about the importance of looking out for vulnerable individuals in the community, particularly those who may have conditions such as dementia. With incidents like these, the aim is not only to ensure safety but also to foster a community that actively cares for its members.
As the investigation unfolds, it is anticipated that further updates will be released, offering insights into both the identification of the remains and any potential next steps for the authorities involved. The discovery remains a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the emotional toll that such tragedies can leave on families and communities alike.
