The incident unfolded on September 21 when Trooper Ritger was involved in a vehicle chase near the bridge straddling Dunn County and Eau Claire County. While attempting to take cover after deploying a tyre deflation device, he fell from the bridge onto the busy Interstate 94 below. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) reported that despite receiving immediate medical assistance, Ritger succumbed to his injuries eleven days later.

WisDOT’s statement characterised Ritger as a devoted public servant whose positive influence was felt by all who encountered him. His professionalism, integrity, and commitment to serving the community were highlighted as core qualities that defined his career. “His dedication to his family and unwavering commitment to his profession will not be forgotten,” the department noted in its tribute.
Following Ritger’s passing, the Wisconsin State Patrol announced the establishment of a memorial vehicle at its Northwest Region Post in Eau Claire. This initiative allows the public to express their condolences through cards, flowers, or other tributes. In a gesture of respect for Ritger’s family, details regarding his funeral arrangements will remain private at this time.
Governor Tony Evers took to social media to express his condolences and confirmed that flags throughout Wisconsin will be lowered in Ritger’s memory once funeral arrangements are completed. Evers described the loss as a “young life lost far too soon,” emphasising the profound impact Ritger had on his colleagues and the community at large. He extended his prayers to Ritger’s family and pledged continued support in the coming days of mourning.
Trooper Ritger was a member of the 67th Recruit Class and had served with the Wisconsin State Patrol for almost five years, primarily focused on the Dunn County area. Prior to joining the state patrol, he spent three years serving with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, where he gained valuable experience that informed his policing principles.
The pursuit that led to Ritger’s tragic accident began after a vehicle hit the tyre deflation device he had deployed. The vehicle subsequently veered off course, coming to rest in a ditch. The driver of that vehicle, identified as Martell Tolbert Mitchell of Minneapolis, has since been arrested and faces multiple charges, including attempting to flee an officer and endangering safety, as well as possessing drugs.
Support for Ritger’s family continues to pour in from community members and fellow officers alike, as many reflect on his dedication and character. The Wisconsin State Patrol has emphasised the importance of honouring his memory, stating that he will always be remembered as a trooper who approached every challenge with unwavering compassion and enthusiasm.
As the state mourns the loss of this young officer, his commitment to duty serves as a reminder of the dangers inherent in law enforcement work. Bradley Ritger’s legacy will endure through the lives he touched, both as a public servant and a beloved member of his community.
