In a recent interview, Kelly Stafford, Matthew’s wife, expressed her joy in watching her daughters play a growing role in the selection of their game day attire. This year’s collaborative effort saw Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler actively contributing ideas for their outfits, often incorporating their father’s jersey number, the Rams’ team colours, and logos. “They’re helping me with them this year, which is really fun,” Kelly stated. “They’re telling me what they want on things and where they want it. So we’re making it a collaboration.”

The family, who have four daughters—twins Sawyer and Chandler, both 9, Hunter, 8, and Tyler, 6—are not just supporting Matthew; they’re also showcasing a vibrant family dynamic as they cheer from the sidelines. The couple met while studying at the University of Georgia and tied the knot in April 2015. Their journey together has been marked by significant milestones, including Matthew’s career, which enters its 18th season this year.

After being hailed as the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, Matthew spent a dozen seasons in Detroit before he was traded to the Rams in January 2021. Remarkably, he led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in his inaugural season with the team. As he continues to play, Kelly is savoring each moment, knowing the reality of a potential transition from playing to retirement could be near.
Reflecting on their family experiences, Kelly noted the bittersweet nature of this NFL season, remarking, “Every season now I will say I’m treating it like the last.” She underlined the significance of involving their daughters in understanding football and appreciating their father’s profession. “Now that all of my girls understand football and what their dad does… that is truly special,” she remarked, celebrating this unique opportunity in their family journey.
However, Kelly admitted that the outfit design process can prove to be rather draining. “I called my mum. I was like, ‘I’m so tired. We made one outfit.’ She’s like, ‘I don’t know why you do this to yourself.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’” Despite the challenges, including the playful pressure to keep her daughters content and happy, she finds joy in the collaborative effort.
This season has seen the Rams facing ups and downs on the field, with Kelly keenly aware of the significance of each game. After a challenging opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, she reiterated her upbeat approach to the season as a celebration. “It’s been 18 years now. It’s been a wild, wild ride. So this season, honestly, we are going to make it to as many games as we can again,” she expressed.
While the future of Matthew’s NFL career remains uncertain, Kelly continues to focus on supporting him. “I just love watching him play. I really do. It’s one of my favourite things in life… to watch him do what he loves, and I will keep supporting him as long as he wants to do it and as loud as I can from the sideline,” she affirmed.
As the Stafford family navigates this season together, their collaborative spirit and unyielding support for Matthew become a heartwarming narrative amidst a competitive league. The girls not only add style and flair to game day but also embody the essence of family unity while sharing countless memories in their father’s athletic journey. As the old adage goes, they may not be the ones on the field, but their efforts amplify the spirit of the game just as much.
