Kara Brown and her husband recently embarked on an ambitious renovation project after purchasing a mid-century modern home in New York. Built in 1956 by architect Julian Naetzker, who drew inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, the property features a striking yet unusual basement pool that the couple initially considered keeping. However, concerns over moisture and safety led them to rethink their plans.
The couple, both in their thirties and parents to a young child, encountered significant humidity issues stemming from the pool. “Even with an industrial-grade dehumidifier, the moisture level was far too high,” Kara explained, expressing fears about potential mould affecting their family’s health. With these concerns top of mind, they made the tough decision to drain the pool entirely.

To retain the historical character of the feature while addressing their home’s moisture issues, the Browns opted to cover the pool with decking rather than filling it permanently with concrete. This decision allows for the possibility of restoring the pool in the future if circumstances change. “We wanted to keep the option open to bring it back someday,” Kara said.
The renovation process was notably quick, taking just a day to complete. The newly decked area is now being used as a play space for their child, making the most of the seasonal changes as winter approaches. “Right now, it’s a great area for our toddler to run around and play,” Kara shared, adding that they are still contemplating the long-term use of the space.
Kara has been documenting their home restoration journey on TikTok, where she recently posted a humorous video detailing the pool’s removal. The lighthearted clip has resonated with viewers, racking up over 5.4 million views. “The pool was just too unique not to share,” she remarked, highlighting the broad interest in mid-century modern design within the online community.
Responses to the video have been mixed, with viewers expressing both support and criticism. Many fans of mid-century architecture are passionate about preserving such homes in their original form. Some commenters questioned why the couple purchased the house if they intended to remove a key feature. Kara addressed these concerns by highlighting the practical reasons for their decision. “The humidity was seriously affecting the overall health of the home, which was not something we could overlook,” she asserted.
Since closing off the pool area, the Browns have turned their attention to restoring the home’s original character and architectural details. “My husband and father-in-law are quite handy, which has allowed us to make renovations that feel personal and true to the home,” Kara explained. Although not every design choice will resonate with all viewers, Kara finds satisfaction in restoring the property and breathing new life into it.
Reflecting on their journey, Kara added: “We fell in love with the architecture, the property, and the unique history of the house. The pool was certainly one of the most unexpected aspects of that history. While we aren’t utilising it at the moment, we felt it was important to preserve it rather than permanently erase it.”
As the Browns continue their renovation project, they are excited about the future potential of their home, maintaining a commitment to honour both its unique characteristics and the needs of their growing family. With an engaging online community supporting their journey, they are eager to unveil more transformations to this remarkable mid-century modern abode.
