The confrontation took place at Pat’s King of Steaks, a storied establishment known for its cheesesteaks since 1930, when the man reportedly threw a cheesesteak at the face of Tom Francano, the general manager. Fortunately, Francano confirmed that he was unharmed during the encounter.

Authorities from the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) received a call about the incident around 5:00 PM. Upon arrival, they learned that a man had allegedly hurled a sandwich at an employee before fleeing the scene. Thankfully, no injuries were reported from this peculiar act of aggression.
In an effort to identify the perpetrator, Pat’s King of Steaks publicly offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the weeks before the suspect turned himself in. The incident gained further attention when security camera footage surfaced, showing the individual filming himself prior to throwing the sandwich.
Reports indicated that the accused apparently began his visit to the restaurant by documenting his experience through photos and videos, which he had taken using a selfie stick. According to Francano, the customer’s behaviour suggested that he was intentionally trying to gain notoriety on social media.
When the man returned to the service window after initially ordering, he expressed disdain for his cheesesteak, telling Francano, “This steak’s garbage,” before launching it at him. Francano described the incident, saying, “The guy picked the sandwich up, threw it in my face and ran off. The coward.”
Following the incident, the restaurant’s owner, Frank Olivieri, speculated that the man’s actions were motivated by a desire for attention online. “He wants to be an influencer. He wants to be famous,” Olivieri noted, commenting on the trend of social media antics that lead people to seek fame through outrageous behaviour. Francano echoed these sentiments, stating that such hostility over food was uncalled for.
After 50 years of service at Pat’s King of Steaks, Francano stated that this particular event was unprecedented, noting his frustration and disbelief. “I was pretty pissed off, you know? I’m not used to getting a steak thrown in my face,” he expressed in an interview.
The police have not released the name of the man charged in the incident, which has attracted considerable attention from both local media and the public. As the legal process continues, many are left questioning whether such behaviour will lead to consequences that curb similar antics in the future.
As the story unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the often blurred line between reality and social media notoriety. Meanwhile, Pat’s King of Steaks, a beloved institution in Philadelphia, continues to serve its legendary cheesesteaks while recovering from an incident that left a mark on its storied history.
