On Friday, October 2, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) and the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the teenager has been charged with 19 counts, which include 10 counts of attempted aggravated murder and various domestic terrorism charges. His identity has not been publicly disclosed due to his age.
The incident involved the student mixing toxic chemicals sourced from home, which led to the release of hazardous gases in the school’s cafeteria. Initially, it was reported that the student had ingested the chemicals, but authorities clarified that he actually inhaled the gases produced by the mixture. Following the incident, he experienced a medical emergency and was urgently taken to hospital in critical condition.

In the aftermath of the gas release, which was believed to possibly involve hydrogen sulfide, over 100 students and school staff were triaged for potential exposure. Mike Benner, Public Information Manager for the PPB, noted at a press conference that out of those assessed, at least seven individuals needed medical care.
The investigation that ensued revealed “concerning behaviours and statements” made by the student prior to the incident. These included an interest in hazardous materials, explosives, and violent acts. Such findings have raised alarms regarding the risks posed to the educational environment by the teenager.
In addition to the charges of attempted aggravated murder, the teen is facing charges of attempted murder in both the first and second degrees, domestic terrorism in both the first and second degrees, unlawful manufacturing and possession of a destructive device, and reckless endangerment. Benner emphasised the gravity of the situation, stating that the charges reflect the serious nature of the conduct uncovered during the investigation and the potential threat it posed to the school community.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the charges have been filed in juvenile court; however, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez expressed his intent to transfer the case to adult court, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.
Currently, the student remains in an inpatient mental health facility where he is receiving necessary treatment, as confirmed by his legal representatives. While defence lawyers have denied the allegations against the teenager, the investigation continues as authorities strive to ensure the safety and well-being of the school community.
The incident has raised wider concerns about mental health support for adolescents, particularly in educational settings. Questions have been raised about the access to appropriate mental health services for young individuals who may exhibit troubling behaviours or ideations.
As the situation unfolds, local authorities and community leaders are calling for dialogue and solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the need for vigilance in monitoring the mental well-being of students. They are also considering measures to enhance school safety and emergency response protocols.
The Portland community remains on alert as these developments progress, with ongoing discussions surrounding student safety and mental health support in the wake of the alarming events that occurred at Benson Polytechnic High School.
