The collision took place around 9:30 a.m. local time at the Transfield Drive roundabout, situated near the suburb of Wallsend. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene following reports that a vehicle had hit multiple individuals attending the farewell gathering. According to New South Wales (NSW) Police, at least ten people sustained injuries during the incident.

Of the injured, two individuals—a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man—are reported to be in critical condition. The other eight victims, ranging in ages from two to 63, are said to be in stable condition and were initially treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to John Hunter Hospital for further medical care.
The driver of the vehicle, now accused of causing the crash, was arrested at the location and subsequently taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Two other individuals were passengers in the car at the time of the incident. Witnesses reportedly described observing the driver lose control of the vehicle prior to the crash. While investigations are underway, the police have indicated that the incident does not appear to be related to terrorism.
In a post on social media platform Instagram, the Newcastle Knights acknowledged the grave situation, stating, “Due to a major incident, the team bus has been diverted from the planned route. We apologise to anybody who was waiting and missed the boys, but public safety is our priority.” Meanwhile, many locals expressed their shock and concern over the events that transpired during what was meant to be a joyful occasion.
Among the injured is Chris Clancy, who was caught up in the collision along with two friends. Clancy shared a photograph of himself in a hospital bed, detailing his injuries, which include a broken collarbone and a suspected broken foot. He recounted the harrowing moment the vehicle approached, expressing his fear for his life.
Peter Parr, CEO of the Newcastle Knights, expressed the team’s concern for all those affected by the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with everyone who has been injured, their families and loved ones, and everyone who witnessed what occurred this morning,” he stated. Parr further emphasised the importance of community support during such a distressing time and commended the swift actions of first responders.
The aftermath of the incident has left a cloud of concern over the local community. The Newcastle Knights had intended to celebrate unity and support as they prepared for their grand final but have now shifted focus to helping those impacted by this tragic event.
As the investigation continues, many await further details from the NSW Police, who have promised to keep the public updated. The Brisbane-based rugby league community, alongside fans of the Newcastle Knights, are now standing together in support of those injured and their families.
