The FBI has arrested a 41-year-old man from Waltham, Massachusetts, in connection with a stalking case involving a former White House aide. John Anthony Proia, III, faces charges of cyberstalking, specifically targeting Katie Miller, the spouse of Stephen Miller, who served as Deputy Chief of Staff under President Donald Trump. The Justice Department confirmed the indictment in a statement released on Thursday, 1 October.

Proia was apprehended by Boston’s Joint Terrorism Task Force shortly after being indicted by a grand jury in Boston. Law enforcement officials indicated he is charged with making over 40 harassing and sexually explicit calls and sending messages to the victim from August to September 2026. After the incident, Katie Miller expressed her gratitude to Attorney General Todd Blanche and the FBI for ensuring our safety.

Katie Miller confirmed through a social media post that she had indeed received a barrage of threatening communication from Proia. Following the indictment, she stated that “this behaviour is criminal and will be treated as it should – with prosecution!” She thanked law enforcement for their actions while voicing relief at the indictment of her alleged stalker.
The case has garnered attention not only for the nature of the charges but also due to reported internal tensions within the FBI regarding the investigation. It has been noted that senior agents faced reassignment as a result of what was characterised as “stifling investigations” into significant threats. A statement from a White House spokesperson highlighted that these reassignments were carried out to ensure the continuation of vital investigations.
According to the Justice Department’s indictment, Proia allegedly employed Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) tools to mask his identity, utilizing an array of unfamiliar phone numbers to contact his victim. This strategy reportedly complicated Katie Miller’s efforts to block his communications, even affecting her ability to receive important calls. Proia was also accused of employing a threatening voice and using explicit language during some of his messages.
In one of the communications, quoted by federal prosecutors, Proia is alleged to have directed derogatory comments at Katie Miller’s family, casting aspersions on her marriage and upbringing. The indictment included references to messages sent via social media platforms, including remarks about unnamed individuals connected to the Trump Cabinet.
The nature of the case has led to heightened scrutiny of the FBI’s internal processes, with reports surfacing that some agents were resistant to charging Proia despite the seriousness of the allegations. In response to inquiries about the decision-making process leading to the reassignment of agents, the FBI stated that it was merely an internal personnel decision made based on ongoing assessments of mission requirements.
Magistrate Judge Paul Levenson issued a set of conditions for Proia’s release, which includes a prohibition on contacting members of the Miller family. He is also required to surrender any weapons he possesses and is forbidden from using VoIP applications.
As the case continues to unfold, it brings to light broader issues surrounding the safety and security of public figures and their families. Proia’s actions not only constitute a direct threat to the individuals involved but also raise concerns about the implications of persistent harassment on their personal lives.
The situation underscores the pressing need for robust protective measures for those employed in public service, especially in light of the ongoing discussions regarding security threats and harassment in the political landscape. The case is expected to be prosecuted by an Assistant U.S. Attorney from the National Security Unit, which handles sensitive matters involving terrorism and breaches of national security.
As attention focuses on the legal proceedings ahead, the story serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by public figures in contemporary society, alongside the responsibilities of agencies like the FBI to ensure a thorough investigation and the protection of victims.
