Fast food giant Taco Bell has announced a collaboration with the popular language-learning app, Duolingo, to unveil a new hot sauce, the Duo Habanero Sauce, on 6th October, coinciding with National Taco Day. This limited-edition offering aims to celebrate the universal love for tacos and encourage global participation.

The eagerly anticipated Duo Habanero Sauce promises a vibrant, tangy taste, complemented by the fruity heat of habanero peppers. According to Taco Bell’s official press release, the sauce aims to stand out, both in flavour and design. Each packet features quirky taco-related language lessons, blending culinary enjoyment with a bit of educational fun.
Customers in the United States will have the opportunity to receive one complimentary packet of the Duo Habanero Sauce with any order of Doritos Locos Tacos. For those keen on extra packets, they will be available for a modest fee of 20 pence each. The eye-catching green packaging is designed to not only hold the sauce but also to intrigue consumers with bite-sized language lessons in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin, among others.
Highlighting the cultural connection of food, one of the packets offers a charming phrase in both French and Spanish: “Tu veux dos tacos, mon cœur?” translating to “Do you want two tacos, sweetheart?” Another packet cheekily declares that “‘Taco’ needs no translation.” Taco Bell’s promotional materials suggest that these phrases underscore the notion that a love for tacos transcends geographical and linguistic barriers.
The excitement around this partnership has spilled over onto social media, with Taco Bell sharing a cheeky post featuring Duo – Duolingo’s green mascot – distributing orders in a Taco Bell drive-thru. The illustration captured the humour of commenters, some jokingly expressing concern about encountering Duo during their meal, hinting at the mascot’s frequent reminders to complete language lessons.
This campaign does not only focus on the United States; Taco Bell has ambitious plans to expand the celebration of National Taco Day to an international audience. The Duo Habanero Sauce will also be introduced in several countries, including Canada, Australia, China, India, Spain, and the UK, on the same day. As part of their Global Taco Day celebrations, select international locations will offer the sauce for free along with various activations featuring Duolingo’s mascot.
To further entice Taco Bell Rewards members, the collaboration includes an enticing offer where customers can access a month of Super Duolingo for free. These promotional codes must be redeemed by mid-November. Additionally, there is an exclusive chance for fans to score a plushie featuring Duo, dressed in a Taco Bell uniform and headset. A limited batch of 1,000 plushies will be available through Taco Bell’s Tuesday Drops page starting at 2 p.m. on 6th October.
In a unique twist, the promotion will also host a special event at a Taco Bell location in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on the same day. Duo, alongside his friends, will serve tacos while testing fans on their language skills. This lively event promises to deliver a festive atmosphere with opportunities for giveaways and Taco Bell swag, allowing fans to engage with the beloved mascot in real life.
Taco Bell and Duolingo’s collaboration not only signifies a delightful fusion of food and learning but also highlights the importance of community and cultural exchange through a shared passion for food. As they prepare to take over National Taco Day, the countdown has begun for taco enthusiasts and language learners alike.
