Captain Smit Machchhar remains in hospital following a harrowing incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv. The flight had more than 170 individuals on board when it took off early in the morning. Approximately two and a half hours into the journey, an emergency signal was issued, which later escalated to a hijacking alert. Reports from Reuters, CNN, and the BBC indicated that the captain, during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, detailed the horrifying moments of the event, noting his determination to prevent the aircraft from crashing.

Captain Machchhar described the chaos in the cockpit as his assailant stabbed him, causing the plane to plummet 17,000 feet. “In that moment, I was fighting for my life,” he recounted on 2nd October, as he reflected on the terrifying incident. This experienced pilot, with a 17-year aviation career and 11 years as captain, vividly remembered the dire situation. Even as the assault continued, he instinctively knew the aircraft was descending and resolved to push through his ordeal.
In a desperate bid for assistance, Machchhar opened the cockpit door while still under attack. He explained that, although he was engaged in a life-and-death struggle, he remained focused on the safety of the passengers: “I knew I was not going to let others die,” he asserted. Thanks to the efforts of courageous passengers who managed to subdue the attacker, the aircraft was successfully diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Two reserve pilots took the controls during this critical diversion.
After being initially treated in Tabuk, Captain Machchhar was airlifted to a hospital in Abu Dhabi, where he is currently in stable condition. The gravity of the situation was echoed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who confirmed that one pilot had attacked the other with the apparent intent of crashing the aircraft. Reports suggest that the co-pilot involved in the incident is of Omani descent.
In light of this alarming event, the United Arab Emirates authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether there was any connection to terrorist activities. Given the severity of the situation, such inquiries are deemed crucial.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his admiration for Captain Machchhar’s quick thinking and bravery during the ordeal, recognising that his decisions undoubtedly saved many lives. During the emotional video call, the captain asserted, “I am not looking at this wound like a wound because that would make my recovery even more difficult.” He expressed optimism about his recovery journey, despite the challenges he faces, and he remains confident he will regain his health.
As the investigation continues and the aviation community processes this shocking event, both Flydubai and the Indian Embassy in the UAE have yet to provide further comments. The incident has raised concerns regarding aviation safety protocols and the mental health of pilots, underscoring the complexities of ensuring security in the skies.
The aftermath of the attack has sparked discussions about emergency procedures aboard flights and the importance of mental health in aviation. As inquiries persist and Captain Machchhar focuses on his recovery, many are hopeful for his swift return to health and the resolution of the broader issues highlighted by this shocking event.
