Gil Bates, well-known from the reality show “Bringing Up Bates,” is recovering in hospital following a heart attack that highlighted the importance of medical attention for persistent health concerns. The 61-year-old father of 19 had been feeling unusual sensations in his chest for approximately two weeks, but it was not until he experienced occasional jaw pain that he decided to seek help.

His wife, Kelly Jo Bates, shared the story via Instagram on 30th September, explaining that Gil’s symptoms had included a peculiar feeling in the chest lasting about 30 seconds, alongside sporadic jaw discomfort. Despite this distress, he did not initially believe that his conditions warranted medical intervention. Kelley Jo noted that their busy lifestyles and Gil’s uncertainty about the severity of his symptoms contributed to his delayed visit to the hospital.
On 28th September, after completing a day of work that included a tree job and mowing several lawns, Gil took the initiative to drive himself to the emergency room, expecting that a few blood tests would confirm he simply needed to return home. However, upon arrival, medical staff quickly diagnosed him with a mild heart attack and commenced treatment with nitroglycerin and heparin to stabilise his condition.

The next day saw Gil undergoing a cardiac catheterisation procedure that lasted four hours. During this procedure, the medical team identified severe blockages in multiple arteries. Notably, his left anterior descending (LAD) artery was found to have an alarming 80% blockage due to significant calcium deposits. They were unable to open this artery with a traditional balloon method and thus employed intravascular lithotripsy before placing a stent measuring 24 mm.
In addition to this, a remarkable 95% blockage was detected in his right coronary artery (RCA), which was directly implicated in the heart attack. A 48 mm stent was positioned in this artery as well. Medical personnel also noted another artery with a blockage of 45% to 50%, though it did not require further intervention.
After the procedure, Kelly Jo reported the doctor’s assessment that Gil had been a “ticking time bomb,” nearly facing a far more severe heart attack had he not sought treatment promptly. Reflecting on the seriousness of the situation, she expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, crediting their healthcare team and divine intervention for what she described as a miracle.
Having been cleared to return home, Gil now begins his recovery journey, which involves cardiac rehabilitation and adjustments to his diet and medications. Kelly Jo is hopeful that her husband will eventually resume his normal activities, emphasising their profound appreciation for the support from family, friends, and the medical community during this challenging time.
Since their marriage in 1987, Gil and Kelly Jo Bates have built an extensive family, which was showcased over the course of ten seasons on their reality series. This health scare occurred soon after the Bates family celebrated another significant milestone— the wedding of their son Warden to Kaybrie—a ceremony that was held later than originally planned as a means to honour her late father.
In light of these events, the Bates family continues to underscore the value of love, support, and prayer in their lives. As they move forward from this incident, they hope to inspire others facing health challenges to take notice of their bodies and seek medical advice when necessary.
