Kumail Nanjiani, the acclaimed comedian and actor, is set to feature in a new tongue-in-cheek crime procedural series, *Special Litter Unit*, produced by Purina’s Tidy Cats brand. The three-part series, which co-stars content creator Jordan Howlett, aims to entertain and engage cat lovers while addressing the often overlooked subject of litter care.

Nanjiani takes on the role of lead agent within the newly formed Special Litter Unit, working alongside rookie officer Howlett to tackle various “litter crimes.” The series is poised to premiere on 1 October across Tidy Cats’ social media platforms, and Nanjiani was quick to accept the role, driven by his affinity for cats—a passion fuelled by his own beloved feline companion, Biscuit.

“I love cats,” he stated, explaining that his bond with Biscuit, who is nearly a year old, has heightened his understanding of feline care. “Cleaning the litter is me taking care of Biscuit, and I do take pride in it,” Nanjiani shared. He believes that maintaining his cat’s litter box is not just a chore, but an act of love—one that reflects his dedication to her wellbeing.

Biscuit is a relatively new addition to Nanjiani’s life. Following the loss of his previous cat, Bagel—who had been with him and his wife, screenwriter Emily V. Gordon, for 17 years—Nanjiani experienced a significant emotional void. After mourning Bagel’s passing in September 2025, the couple decided to open their hearts to a new pet. They adopted Biscuit from Kitt Crusaders during a pet adoption fair in Pasadena, California.
Reflecting on that fateful day, Nanjiani recalled how he was immediately captivated by Biscuit. “The person at the fair told me, ‘Just hold her,'” he remembered. “As soon as I picked her up and felt her purr, I knew she was the one for us.” Over time, his affection for Biscuit has only deepened. He describes her as “the friendliest, most affectionate cat,” adding that her exuberance brings boundless joy into their lives. “Every day is Disneyland for her,” he said, highlighting her playful nature.
The cost of adopting Biscuit was incredibly modest, with Nanjiani referring to it as “the best deal in the world.” He emphasised the immense return on their investment in the form of happiness she provides, jokingly noting that it is “absurdly good.”
Beyond the joy Biscuit brings to his life, Nanjiani finds comfort and solace in her presence amid his work-related anxieties. Describing the unpredictability of his career, he revealed, “Every day is completely different. There’s no predictability at all.” Having a cat has been an effective way for him to ground himself, allowing him to step back from his worries and simply enjoy the uncomplicated nature of feline life.
Nanjiani’s commitment to pet ownership has evidently fostered a deeper connection with his fans. He noted that many share their passion for cats with him, sending photographs of their own pets and even creating artwork inspired by his cats. “I’m a famous cat lover now, and I love it,” he said, expressing his delight in connecting with fellow cat enthusiasts.
With the launch of *Special Litter Unit*, Nanjiani hopes to not only entertain viewers but also spark a renewed appreciation for the sometimes mundane aspects of pet ownership, like litter maintenance. The series promises to marry humour with an important message for cat parents everywhere.
Fans can catch Nanjiani in the *Special Litter Unit* series beginning 1 October, with new episodes rolling out throughout the following week on Tidy Cats’ social media accounts. The initiative looks set to resonate with a wide audience, especially those who understand the unique bond between humans and their furry friends.
