Suleika Jaouad, a 38-year-old author and journalist, has recently announced that she is preparing to undergo her third bone marrow transplant after sharing a health update with her followers on social media. Initially diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia at the age of 22, Jaouad revealed that the treatments that had previously kept her cancer under control are no longer effective.

In an Instagram post shared on 28 September, Jaouad disclosed that she had been hoping to avoid further major medical interventions but has now accepted that another transplant is necessary. Accompanying her heartfelt message was a candid photograph of her in the hospital, connected to various intravenous devices, underscoring the seriousness of her condition.
Jaouad’s journey with leukaemia began shortly after she graduated from Princeton University, where she was confronted with a daunting prognosis — only a 35% chance of long-term survival. After enduring two prior bone marrow transplants, she faces the reality of having to go through the procedure again, bringing her journey full circle as she hopes for advancements in medical treatment.

Emails and text messages to family and friends provided Jaouad with comfort as she navigated through her illness, and she remains particularly grateful for the supportive presence of her husband, Jon Batiste, along with her family, friends, and pets. She spoke fondly of the joy her four dogs, two peacocks, and fourteen chickens bring to her life, illustrating the importance of love and companionship during her challenging times.
In her post, Jaouad expressed her gratitude for her medical team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She emphasised the trust she has in her doctors, Eytan Stein and Sergio Giralt, both of whom have been pivotal during her treatment. Alongside her announcement regarding her personal health, Jaouad urged the establishment of the Suleika Jaouad Fund for Leukaemia & Stem Cell Transplant Research. This initiative aims to finance research into more complex forms of leukaemia and the development of improved transplantation techniques.
Reflecting on her experiences with leukaemia, Jaouad noted that she has benefitted from innovative treatments that were unavailable at the time of her initial diagnosis. Yet, she feels a sense of urgency and determination, stating that she is awaiting the next breakthrough in medical research that could provide her with better options.

Jaouad also shared her hope for the future, not only for herself but for others facing similar challenges. She conveyed a deep desire to be present for years to come and offered compassionate thoughts for future patients who will receive news similar to hers, highlighting the importance of continuous advancement in medical science. “There is something new we can try. What a beautiful sentence,” she wrote, recognising the hope that future developments could offer.
Despite the uncertainties ahead, Jaouad maintains a positive outlook and finds joy in her current life. “Today, I’m still home. My suitcase lies half open on the floor, half-packed,” she shared, indicating her readiness to move forward while cherishing the moments spent with her loved ones, including her husband.
Moving forward, Jaouad plans to document her health journey through her ‘Isolation Journals’ newsletter on Substack, inviting others to join her in exploring creativity and connection. Her heartfelt messages have resonated widely, with many public figures, including Rita Wilson and Glenn Close, offering words of encouragement and support in the comments section of her post.
In a world where personal challenges can often feel isolating, Jaouad’s transparency shines a light on the importance of community, resilience, and hope. As she prepares for this next chapter in her battle against leukaemia, her commitment to helping others and advocating for medical research remains unwavering, creating a legacy of inspiration and motivation.
