Farrah Abraham, well-known for her role on MTV’s “Teen Mom,” is currently navigating a challenging recovery following her recent double-disc jaw surgery. In an interview with PEOPLE, her manager, Chrissy Johnston, provided insight into Abraham’s situation, stating that the surgery, performed in an effort to address ongoing jaw issues, has presented considerable difficulties for the reality TV star.

Abraham, now 35, had her stitches removed on 30 September, which Johnston referred to as a “small but welcome milestone.” However, the recovery process is far from easy. Johnston explained that the surgery has left Abraham’s mouth wired shut for the next two months, meaning she is unable to speak or eat solid foods. Instead, she is restricted to a strict liquid diet. Johnston noted that Abraham has already shed a noticeable amount of weight due to these dietary limitations.

The aftermath of the surgery has been tough on Abraham. She is experiencing significant pain and swelling in her face, alongside issues including hearing loss in one ear. Johnston expressed sympathy for Abraham’s circumstances, stating, “She’s understandably not having the easiest time right now.” However, Johnston also emphasised that Abraham is trying to remain optimistic, despite the toll that the pain and restrictions have taken on her mood.
Despite her recovery challenges, Abraham is actively working on her campaign for the Austin City Council. Johnston mentioned that the star is focusing on one day at a time and making efforts to continue progressing in her personal and professional life. This leap into political aspirations indicates Abraham’s desire to direct her focus away from her current health struggles.
During this difficult period, Abraham’s daughter, Sophia, has provided glimpses into her mother’s recovery on social media. Recently, Sophia shared a TikTok live session where Abraham candidly referred to herself as “Frankenstein”, a lighthearted nod to her appearance during recovery. In the video, Abraham showcased a sign she created to communicate her situation, expressing hope that her facial swelling would diminish within three months.
Abraham shares her daughter Sophia, now 17, with her late partner Derek Underwood, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2008, just before Sophia was born. This poignant aspect of her story adds another layer to her ongoing resilience in the face of adversity.
Outside of her medical challenges, Abraham has previously opened up about her experiences with cosmetic procedures. In an interview with Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast back in March 2025, she discussed the influence of her peers on her decision to pursue preventive cosmetic enhancements during her 20s. “I feel like if I wait until I’m older… it gets more expensive,” she stated, advocating for early intervention. Abraham encouraged women to embrace their bodies without shame, indicating her belief that self-improvement should not be a source of guilt.
Her past procedures include butt injections and a lip implant, the latter of which did not go as planned and had serious repercussions, leading to her appearance on the show “Botched.” Recalling her experience, Abraham admitted her feelings of embarrassment when seeking help from Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif to correct the complications from the lip procedure.
As Farrah Abraham continues to manage her recovery, her journey highlights broader conversations around health, wellness, and the pressures associated with public life. Whether it is coping with her immediate physical challenges or addressing her ambitions in local politics, it is clear that Abraham maintains a tenacious spirit as she seeks to forge ahead despite her circumstances.
