A Michigan woman, Cortney Bartholomew, is facing serious charges, including the murder of her pregnant daughter, Rebecca Park. Prosecutors assert that Bartholomew and her husband, Bradley Bartholomew, conspired to lure the 22-year-old to their residence before taking her to a remote area where they allegedly killed her. During the hearing, Richard Farlor, who is the fiancé of Rebecca and the father of her unborn child, provided testimony regarding events leading up to Rebecca’s disappearance. Notably, Farlor revealed that he had previously been in a sexual relationship with Cortney Bartholomew, which concluded roughly one month prior to the commencement of his relationship with Rebecca. This revelation added complexity to the family dynamics involved in the case.
Farlor, aged 43, indicated that his relationship with Cortney lasted from April to September 2023. He recounted how Cortney expressed a desire to have another child, despite telling him that she was unable to conceive. He described a concerning incident on the evening before Rebecca vanished, during which Cortney attempted to intervene when Rebecca’s water broke. Farlor testified that a friend had taken them to the hospital, but Cortney unsuccessfully tried to divert them to her own vehicle.
The unraveling of Rebecca’s tragic fate began to unfold through the details provided by Farlor. According to him, Rebecca was lured to Cortney’s home using a fabricated story about an inheritance—an $18,000 cheque from her grandmother. Following her arrival, it is alleged that Cortney and Bradley Bartholomew murdered her. The final sighting of Rebecca occurred shortly before midnight on November 3 at her mother’s home, with her body discovered several miles away in the Manistee National Forest on November 25, mere days after her anticipated due date.
In an early interview with authorities, Cortney Bartholomew denied any involvement in her daughter’s murder, claiming ignorance about who was responsible. However, after investigators tracked her phone to the crime scene, she altered her statement, alleging that her husband had initiated the attack while she assisted in the fatal procedure. Bradley, according to Cortney, allegedly held a knife to Rebecca’s throat while she used a scalpel to cut the unborn child from Rebecca’s womb, an act that left the baby deceased.
Court documents state that Bradley purportedly informed investigators that the motive behind the murder stemmed from Cortney’s desire for a child and complications arising from his status as a registered sex offender, which hindered their ability to adopt. The pair are additionally charged with a range of serious offences, including felony murder, torture, and conspiracy related to the assault on a pregnant individual.
Continuing the disturbing narrative, Farlor’s testimony included allegations regarding Jennifer Park, Rebecca’s sister, who initially claimed he confessed to the murder. Investigators later deemed these statements unfounded, redirecting the investigation back to Cortney and Bradley Bartholomew.
To complicate matters further, Cortney contested her husband’s assertions that she was the mastermind behind the murder plot. She claimed that the actions taken against Rebecca were motivated by a personal vendetta from Bradley towards Farlor, stemming from a reported parole violation.
Both Cortney and Bradley Bartholomew are awaiting further legal proceedings, with their preliminary hearings scheduled to resume on November 9.
