Busby’s journey into competitive gardening began just four years ago, ignited by a family tradition. Initially, it was his mother’s enthusiasm for growing a pumpkin for the popular Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta that prompted Busby to get involved. “I grew it and we had almost a 200-pound pumpkin just on the lawn,” he recalled, reflecting on his early foray into gardening.
Over the years, Busby became a member of the Maine Pumpkin Growers Organisation, which typically provides its members with pumpkin seeds. However, two years ago, he found tomato seeds included in the seed packets. Emboldened by this opportunity, Busby attempted to cultivate tomatoes, yielding a modest three-pound fruit on his first effort. Unsatisfied, he decided to aim higher for subsequent seasons.

He meticulously fed his Domingo tomato seeds a gallon of water each day leading up to their pollination in late July. Alongside this regimented watering schedule, he utilised organic fertiliser and opted out of using pesticides altogether, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable gardening practices.
As the ripe tomato matured, Busby was vigilant about the conditions, especially following recent bouts of rainfall. “I waited till the last minute I could,” he explained, sharing the moment he decided it was time to harvest. The excitement at finally weighing the tomato was palpable. “The feeling was unbelievable,” he stated, emphasising that breaking the record had always been his goal, and reaching it filled him with satisfaction.
In addition to the accolade, the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth offered some insights into growing giant fruits, noting that dedication, good soil, and the practice of allowing one fruit to grow per plant are crucial aspects. They also advised that a touch of luck can greatly enhance one’s chances of success in the competitive gardening scene.

He relishes the community aspect of competitive gardening, often meeting individuals who share his passion for growing. “Ninety-nine percent of the people I’ve met are nice and will indulge just about every bit of information there is,” Busby remarked. Looking ahead, Busby has ambitious plans for the next growing season and is determined to cultivate an even larger tomato, aiming for the 8-pound mark. His competitive spirit is paired with a sense of humour about his current giant, as he mused about potential uses for the record-breaking fruit. “I might taste a little bit, try a bit of it. Besides that, I might give some to somebody’s chickens. It’s an awful lot of tomato,” he quipped.
