A fundraising campaign that garnered over £600,000 for an elderly man’s wife has been removed from GoFundMe amid accusations of misrepresentation. The campaign, entitled “HelpDonRetire,” was established to assist Donald Johnson, 81, in covering medical expenses for his wife, Josephine, who is battling cancer.

The fundraiser came to public attention when a video surfaced, showing Donald struggling to carry luggage while making deliveries in The Colony, Texas. The footage was shared by Erin Howell, a neighbour who felt compelled to help after witnessing the elderly man’s difficult task. Her empathy led her to launch the GoFundMe page, which quickly gained traction and raised an impressive total of approximately £745,000.

Describing the scene that prompted her to act, Howell stated that her door camera captured Donald painstakingly hauling her heavy luggage up a steep flight of stairs. This heart-wrenching image encouraged her to meet him and offer assistance, catalyzing the fundraising effort.
Despite the overwhelming support, GoFundMe officials removed the campaign after a review uncovered factual inaccuracies related to the fundraiser’s organisation. Reports indicated that the name of the individual associated with the fundraiser was not genuine; instead, the campaign had been initiated by the couple’s daughter, Amy Johnson, who had used a pseudonym in the original posting.
Amy responded to the ensuing controversy via a TikTok account connected to the campaign. She explained that the removal was due to a “technicality,” asserting that the essence of her parents’ story was “100% true.” She detailed the family’s current difficulties, explaining that the funds raised were intended to alleviate the financial strain of her mother’s pancreatic cancer treatment. “We had so much hope and we were able to take care of the medical bills and everything. To lose it is just… really hard,” she shared emotionally.
In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for GoFundMe explained that the platform’s Trust & Safety team intervened due to factual misrepresentations that went against their Terms of Service. They reiterated that ensuring GoFundMe remains a secure and trustworthy venue for donations is critical, which led to the decision to refund all contributors under the GoFundMe Giving Guarantee.
“Authenticity and transparency are paramount for donors, and our policies enforce these standards strictly,” the spokesperson said, emphasising the importance of safeguarding donor generosity. The action taken against the campaign demonstrates GoFundMe’s commitment to maintaining trust among its users, especially in sensitive situations like this one.
Following the closure of the GoFundMe page, Amy has transferred her efforts to a GiveSendGo campaign, which has thus far attracted over £200,000 in donations. The family hopes that this new initiative will help garner support for Josephine’s medical needs, despite the earlier setback.
The incident has sparked discussions online regarding transparency and accountability in crowdfunding, particularly in contexts that appeal to the public’s compassion. While the Johnson family continues to advocate for their cause, the situation highlights the delicate balance between raising funds and ensuring adherence to platform regulations.
PEOPLE has contacted both the Johnson family and GoFundMe for additional comments regarding this ongoing situation, as the family seeks to navigate the challenging landscape of online fundraising. Advocacy for Josephine’s care continues, although the recent turmoil poses significant emotional and financial challenges for the family.
