A devastating house fire in Troy, New York, claimed the lives of three family members, leaving a young boy as the sole survivor. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, September 27, and has deeply affected the local community.

The victims have been identified as Dominick Rizzo Jr., his fiancée Alicia, and their 11-year-old daughter Abigail. Their 13-year-old son, Dominick Rizzo III, managed to escape the flames by leaping from a second-storey window, a harrowing act that ultimately saved his life. Will Roberson, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was nearby and helped catch the boy as he fell.
The Troy Fire Department responded to the emergency call at approximately 9:35 pm. Reports indicate that firefighters worked valiantly to rescue those trapped inside the home. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Dominick Rizzo Jr., Alicia, and Abigail were all later pronounced dead at local hospitals. Abigail had been reported in critical condition earlier the same night, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter.
Local officials expressed their sorrow over the tragedy, with the city releasing a statement that mourned the loss of the Rizzo family. “Our hearts are broken for the Rizzo family,” the statement said, adding that Dominick III is now being supported by friends, family, and the wider community during this unimaginably difficult time.
Roberson recounted the moments leading up to Dominick III’s escape. While studying, he heard the boy crying for help and rushed to the scene. Realising the fire was overwhelming, he and other bystanders decided that the safest way to help was to encourage the boy to jump. “We figured, just get the kid out any way possible,” Roberson explained.
Despite initial panic, Dominick III managed to climb to the window. Roberson and fellow helpers positioned themselves to catch him as he jumped, successfully bringing him to safety. After the ordeal, the boy was taken to a neighbour’s house while authorities assessed the situation and attempted to reach out to other family members.
In the wake of this tragedy, community members have rallied to support Dominick III. Roberson indicated plans for a fundraising effort to assist the boy during what will surely be a challenging time ahead. “Just thinking about what he went through and what he’s going to go through in the coming years, it just kind of hits me in the gut,” he shared.
Fire officials confirmed that the blaze began on the home’s first floor, and an investigation is currently underway by the Office of Fire Prevention and Control. At this time, there is no indication that the fire was the result of foul play.
Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello expressed her condolences, calling it “a devastating day for our city.” She affirmed that the community stands in solidarity with the Rizzo family and will be there to support them as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy.
