Chuck Varga, the founding member of the notorious heavy metal band Gwar, has passed away at the age of 68. Known to fans as the “Sexecutioner,” Varga’s death was announced by bandmate Casey Orr, who shared the news in a heartfelt Facebook post on September 25.

In his tribute, Orr expressed his sorrow at the loss of his long-time friend and collaborator, stating, “Chuck Varga has left this earthly realm. He passed peacefully, his beloved wife Bambi holding his hand. He was one of a kind.” The bassist, who performs under the moniker “Beefcake the Mighty,” continued with poignant reflections on Varga’s character, highlighting his contributions as an artist, performer, scholar, and gentleman.

Varga’s journey with Gwar began in 1985, when he helped to co-found the band that would become infamous for its outrageous performances and theatricality. Throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role, most notably as the Sexecutioner, participating in eight major touring productions and co-authoring two feature films, including the Grammy-nominated “Phallus in Wonderland.”

Prior to his time with the band, Varga studied at Virginia Commonwealth University, after which he co-founded Slave Pit Studios in Richmond, Virginia, the creative hub from which Gwar was birthed.

Despite taking a hiatus from Gwar in 1997 to pursue Broadway and television projects in New York City, Varga’s influence on the band never waned. He made occasional appearances in performances, keeping his connection alive until his retirement in 2021. During his time with Gwar, the band earned two Grammy nominations, a testament to their impact on the heavy metal genre.

While the specific cause of Varga’s death has not been disclosed, it was revealed earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with cancer. In response to his illness, the band launched a nationwide blood donation campaign and fundraiser to honour him.
