A man from Ohio has been indicted on multiple charges relating to the tragic case of a teenage girl who disappeared earlier this year. On September 23, a federal grand jury issued a nine-count indictment against 39-year-old Tyler Nike Thomas, accusing him of “sexually exploiting and murdering” 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee. This announcement was made by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio.

Hailey Buzbee, a resident of Fishers, Indiana, was last seen on January 5, and her family reported her missing shortly thereafter. Initial investigations suggested that she might have run away. However, police later revealed that Buzbee likely went missing shortly after she was picked up by Thomas, whom she allegedly met through online gaming platforms.
According to prosecutors, Thomas first established contact with Buzbee when she was just 15 years old during their interactions on games such as Roblox and League of Legends. They contend that he began attempting to persuade her to engage in sexual acts by May 2024. Days after Buzbee was reported missing, Thomas allegedly drove from Columbus to Fortville, Indiana, picked her up, and transported her back to Ohio, where prosecutors believe he murdered her.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Thomas was in an Airbnb in Logan, Ohio, on January 6. Cellphone records purportedly placed him there around the time Buzbee was thought to have been killed. The following day, his phone was detected at the North Country Trail Trailhead in Wayne National Forest, where he allegedly remained for several hours. Buzbee’s remains were later discovered in this vicinity.
In addition to these serious charges, a forensic examination of Thomas’s phone reportedly found deleted conversations with Buzbee, including sexually explicit images taken both in his Columbus home and the Airbnb. Prosecutors allege that he attempted to hide his crime by decapitating, dismembering, and burying Buzbee’s body.
Thomas was first apprehended by local authorities in January on charges of pandering obscenity and evidence tampering, relating to Buzbee’s disappearance. During his initial questioning, Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart noted that Thomas admitted to picking up Buzbee but claimed he dropped her off by the roadside in western Ohio. However, further investigation revealed that his account was not credible.
Thomas’s attorney, Samuel Shamansky, indicated earlier that Thomas had cooperated with investigators, leading them to Buzbee’s remains in Perry County, Ohio, on February 2. “Mr. Thomas made the decision when we first met him on Friday to assist the government and law enforcement with locating Ms. Buzbee’s body, and that was of fair amount of importance to us and to Mr. Thomas,” Shamansky explained at that time.
With the federal charges now superseding the local ones, Thomas faces severe allegations including kidnapping resulting in death, travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, and several counts related to sexual exploitation and obstruction of justice. His attorney confirmed that they are currently reviewing evidence in preparation for his defence.
As of now, Thomas has not officially entered a plea to the federal charges, with his arraignment scheduled for next week. The case has garnered significant public interest, particularly due to the tragic circumstances surrounding Buzbee’s disappearance and untimely death.
Buzbee was remembered by her family and community as a promising young woman. Her relatives highlighted that she was a student at HSC High School in Ohio and worked part-time as a server at a local restaurant. Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness described her as “a bright light in the family” who had “a tremendous amount of promise and hope.”

It raises important discussions surrounding online safety for minors as gaming platforms are becoming increasingly popular among teenagers.
