McDonald’s has embarked on an innovative digital advertising pilot programme, testing the new feature in 450 of its company-owned drive-thrus across the United States. The initiative, which began in August, aims to enhance the customer experience while promoting relevant content to customers post-purchase.

In an official statement, a spokesperson for McDonald’s explained that the ads will focus on “post-purchase content” that might be beneficial or interesting for customers. The goal is to maintain the overall customer experience as the fast-food giant explores ways to integrate advertising into its menu boards. “Tests and pilots are something we’ve routinely done throughout our history to learn in real environments,” the corporation expressed, indicating their commitment to evolving business practices.

Morgan Flatley, McDonald’s global chief marketing officer, discussed the importance of advertising in a presentation during the company’s recent Investor Day. She noted that commerce media is a growing sector within the advertising landscape. Flatley also highlighted how this new advertising initiative aims to ensure that “the McDonald’s experience remains at the centre of every visit.”
The fast-food chain is not only testing digital ads but is also launching the McDonald’s Media Network, which they hope will grow into a billion-dollar business. Flatley conveyed that the new venture presents an opportunity for revenue generation with minimal operational complexity, stating, “It’s an opportunity to generate revenue for the system, with little in the way of additional cost.”
Along with the digital advertising tests, McDonald’s is rolling out a strategy called McDonald’s > NEXT. This ambitious plan seeks to make McDonald’s a preferred choice for a wider customer base. Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski explained that the initiative aims to strengthen and streamline restaurant operations for a more consistent guest experience.
Key components of this strategy include innovation in menu offerings, enhancements to customer relationships, modernisation of restaurant design, and training employees for a “new level of hospitality.” The company is simultaneously looking to implement ArchIQ, an artificial intelligence programme designed to improve efficiency in restaurant operations.
Since the launch of its “Accelerating the Arches” strategy in 2020, McDonald’s has focused on modernising technology and infrastructure, integrating common technology platforms and operating systems to embrace innovation. These advancements allow the brand to identify opportunities, rigorously test them, and deploy successful initiatives more effectively.
Amid these changes, McDonald’s is also bringing back its popular Monopoly game for the second consecutive year. From October 6 to November 1, registered rewards members can participate in the game by peeling off game pieces from specially marked menu items and scanning them into the McDonald’s app. Participants have a chance to win various prizes, including complimentary food, bonus reward points, and larger prizes such as a 2027 Jeep Cherokee.
The Monopoly promotion, which first launched in 1987, has faced its share of scandals over the years. One of the most notable incidents involved Jerome “Jerry” Jacobson, the security director of the marketing company behind the game, who was charged with stealing game pieces worth millions of dollars. Jacobson’s actions led to his arrest in 2001, and he ultimately faced significant legal repercussions, including a prison sentence and a restitution payment of $12.5 million.
As McDonald’s continues to innovate and expand its offerings, both through digital advertising and engaging promotions like Monopoly, it aims to strengthen its position in a competitive fast-food market while maintaining a commitment to providing a positive customer experience.
