**Squirrel Whisperer Helps Local Rodent Get Vital Care**

In a heartwarming display of compassion for wildlife, Derrick Downey Jr. has recently drawn attention for his dedication to a neighbourhood squirrel named Maxine, whom he rescued from a dental issue. Downey took it upon himself to get Maxine the veterinary care she desperately needed when he noticed that her teeth were growing unusually long, causing her considerable distress.
Downey Jr. shares their journey through engaging videos on his social media accounts, appealing to animal lovers and showcasing his unique bond with the local squirrels. In one particular video, he documented the moment he successfully coaxed Maxine into a carrier, cleverly using her favourite rewards to gain her trust. He quipped, “All I had to do was tell her this: ‘I got these nuts for you.’”
Upon realising the severity of her dental problem—her teeth were literally piercing her upper mouth—Downey knew an urgent trip to the vet was essential. However, the animal clinic was closed at the time, so he took the precaution of keeping Maxine in a separate room at his home, albeit at the cost of some minor chaos as the energetic squirrel explored her temporary space.
Fortunately, when he was finally able to take her to an animal hospital, the veterinary team sprang into action to address Maxine’s condition. “We were able to file her teeth,” Downey recounted. With a touch of self-deprecating humour, he added, “I love how I keep saying we, like I was doing any other work; I was sitting in the back observing.” He proceeded to elaborate on the thorough examination Maxine received, which included blood tests and X-rays to ascertain her overall health.
In a particularly sentimental gesture, Downey asked the veterinary staff to take a paw print from Maxine, and he plans to get a tattoo of it—a tribute he has described as his first. The following day, after Maxine’s operation, Downey released her back into the wild. He filmed her exuberant return to form, stating, “Look at her running like she never ran before with a whole new set of teeth.”
Reflecting on his connection with Maxine and the other squirrels, Downey recently revealed to PEOPLE magazine that his bond with these creatures began during a challenging period in 2022. Struggling through depression and ongoing health issues, he found solace in his interactions with the local squirrels, using these moments to connect with nature and reflect on his own life.
“Walking around my neighbourhood and connecting with the squirrels became my way of getting out of that dark place,” he explained. Downey would spend time observing and even conversing with them, and eventually began recording these interactions. His videos have since garnered a loyal following, earning him the affectionate title of the “Squirrel Whisperer.”
Over the years, Downey has developed the remarkable ability to differentiate between the various squirrels in his area, but it is Maxine with whom he has built the strongest rapport. He noted that she “gravitates towards me”, positively interacting by jumping and climbing on him, highlighting the deep connection they share.
“Our moments together are quite special,” Downey remarked. “They spend time with me while I go about my day, whether I’m on my patio, balcony, or walking through the neighbourhood. It’s truly a wonderful companionship.”
His story serves as a reminder of the simple joys found in wildlife and the meaningful relationships that can develop between humans and animals. As Downey continues to document his experiences with Maxine and her squirrel friends, he inspires others to appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of caring for all living beings.
