Sharon Horgan’s latest project, titled *Youth*, explores the complexities of motherhood and relationships in her new HBO comedy series. The show, which premiered on September 20, features Horgan as Alex, a divorced mother of an 18-year-old son named Rauri, played by Aran Murphy. Horgan expressed her admiration for Murphy, the 19-year-old son of acclaimed actor Cillian Murphy. During the casting process, she encountered numerous talented young actors but found none matched Murphy’s unique presence. “As great as they all were, none of them were Ruari. Then Aran appears onscreen, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, well, that’s clearly him,’” she recalled, highlighting how she felt an immediate connection.
Describing Murphy as “fabulous,” Horgan remarked on the fortunate alignment that led to his casting. “When it comes to casting, it is a mixture of luck and fate,” she said. Horgan was so impressed with Murphy’s audition that securing him for the role became a straightforward decision for HBO: “We sent the casting tape to HBO and they were like, ‘Well, I mean, obviously we’re going to go with him.’”
Horgan aimed to portray a genuine mother-son dynamic, which she found effortless with Murphy. “I felt like his mother,” she admitted, noting that the authenticity of his performance made their interactions seamless. “All of that was so easy to play because he always just felt like a real boy,” she added, capturing the essence of their on-screen relationship.
From the initial stages of conceptualising *Youth*, Horgan had envisioned the intricate relationship of Alex and Rauri. Reflecting on her inspirations, she shared the personal struggles she faced post-divorce. “I was trying to figure out what my next move would be,” the 56-year-old actress explained. “I was 50 and thinking what’s next… I was worried that that was it — I was going to be alone. I thought of the cast of characters back then.”
Although she always intended to take on the lead role, Horgan emphasised the importance of her ensemble cast. The series includes notable performances from Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte, and Robbie Gee. Particularly, Horgan found the casting of Friend as her character’s on-again, off-again love interest, Patrick, to be serendipitous. “I probably hadn’t envisaged someone quite as handsome,” she joked, praising Friend’s ability to bring charm and complexity to his role.
The show promises a blend of humour and heart, reflecting the many facets of life that come with age and changing relationships. Horgan’s comedic voice and personal insight shine through the narrative as she tackles the notion of motherhood and the difficulties of starting anew.
